I understand she's got burn scars, but in light of the fact that they are evidently not oozing messes - why is she always so dirty looking? Always needs a shampoo... iron..

I thought it was because she had low self esteem because of the burn scars and so maybe didn't want too much attention (if any) from anyone, so therefore didn't always take care of herself. Note how in the beginning she's usually hiding behind her books, keeps her head down a lot, wearing heavy coats even in LA. Seems she starts to take of herself once the scars disappear and her whole personality changes too.
