Why so hard to purchase?

It is unavailable on Netflix. On Amazon in the used section, its lowest price is $40. Does anyone know why this 1996 film is such a hard find? I'm trying to build up my film-library, but I'm not paying $40 for a used DVD. Is it planning on being re-released any time soon?

Yeah, I was shocked to see that a new copy sells for about $94 on Amazon. Being South African, it would have cost me a friggin' fortune. I ordered it through a South African internet company, which also delivers internationally. I just checked that with the exchange rate, a NEW copy is gonna cost you about $33, delivery included. (The USA delivery cost is unfortunately more expensive than the DVD itself.)

Of course you're gonna need a multi-zone DVD player.

Anyway, if you want to explore this possibility, go to http://www.kalahari.com

Obviously you don't have to buy it there but I order from a site called daaveedee. Google and it should pop up. They have the British DVD for 17.99 plus tax and shipping and it seems to be the correct aspect ratio. As Lisa suggested you will need a regionless player but if you are looking for a Lars Von Trier film good chance says you're a movie buff and need one anyway lol and I can say my $140 regionless player is one of the best things I have ever bought. I'm watching movies I would spend a lifetime trying to find in the States. I know I'm going with the British dvd. Too bad Criterion didn't release this instead of crap like DePalma's Blow Out. Their Europa dvd is awesome.

shudnt b hard to find now. barnes and noble carries every criterion collection, or at least most of them.

Probably because most people are not interested in watching films that glorify satan. Hence there is no market for this film, except for a few hardcore atheists or satanists who love satanic films and will pay an arm and a leg to buy one.

There have been rumors the last year or so of The Criterion Collection putting out a Blu Ray and DVD. It wouldn't be for a while, but that'll be cheaper. Also, if that's announced, the ridiculous prices of the current DVD would drop.

Wow. I'm interested in how other people experience the world. The market for this film is bigger than you imagine.

What's it going to be then, eh?

reply

Dumb Comment buddy. Why? because Atheists and Satanists would be the minority of people who have enjoyed this film. Get real. The film is a masterpiece.

reply

Wow, I was shocked to see those prices.

According to my amazon.com records, I paid $12.99 for it back in 2002. I haven't the faintest why it is so expensive nowadays.

£4 on amazon.co.uk :/

**edit**

forgot regions lol XD just checked american and wow :/.. nicer cover then UK version though!!!!

reply

I'm disappointed with my purchase, which is the UK version that's also available on Amazon UK. I'm pretty sure it's been censored, because the first sex scene between Jan and Bess is not exactly how I remember it. Who knows what else has been censored, that I just don't remember?

But I still can't bring myself to pay more (in ZAR) for a single DVD than I would for a DVD PLAYER.

In the UK this is out there for £6, which is pretty normal for a DVD...
