I like movies like this too.
I'd recommend seeing Thirteen Conversations About One Thing and Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her - two I like quite a bit.

You can't go wrong with these:

Steve Rash, Queen's Logic (Queens, NY)
Phil Kaufman, The Wanderers (Bronx)
Paul Mazursky, Moscow on the Hudson (Brooklyn, Manhattan)
John Gallagher, The Deli (Manhattan)

elsewhere but highly recommended:

Barry Levinson, Diner (Baltimore)
Pete Medak, Men's Club (Berkeley, Ca)
Peter Yates, Breaking Away (Bloomington Indy)
Richard Donner, Inside Moves (Oakland, Ca)
Floyd Mutrux, Aloha Bobby & Rose (the Valley, So Cal)
Ken Branagh, Peter's Friends (England)
Larry Kasdan, Big Chill (Atlanta & Beaufort, So Carol)

Smoke somehow reminds me of Slacker by Richard Linklater. Not exactly the same, but both movies have vivid, authentic characters and dialogue.

Though set in Memphis and not NYC Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train (1989) is very similar to Smoke. Awesome film!

Somebody here has been drinking and I'm sad to say it ain't me - Allan Francis Doyle

Wonder Boys, set in Pittsburg though.

Le Jetee, directed by Chris Marker. It's a bunch of still photos that combine to make a film. Running time is only 28 minutes, but it's pretty interesting.
