I think it's to submerge Carol into the ultimate in utilitarian decenteredness. The economic booming of the 80s only heightens the disconnection from actual life. Money is maybe a subtle, but relevant, infectious by-product. This movie is interesting on so many levels, from the most basic horror-story viewing, to the most complex critical workover. It's an indie classic because it can withstand either approach. I wrote in an earlier post that its DVD incarnation has the most intelligent, evocative commentary I've ever heard. A gift.
