I havent seen this in a long time. Was the suicide in the very beginning? If so, what was the name of the buried man statue he was sitting by? I remember visiting it in 1993. The school group I was with slid down the leg like a slide. Just wondering if anyone knew the real name for the statue or location?

The sculpture is called 'The Awakening',it was created by J.Seward Johnson jr. in 1980 for the International Sculpture Conference Exhibition. The statue consists of five separate pieces buried in the ground,it proved so popular,that 27 years after the event it still remains

I heard that they are planning to move the statue to somewhere in Maryland. That sucks!!! I spent many field trips at hains point on that statue.

You have to understand he was extremly homophobic, and back then a lot of politically center and center-right people were in denial about the disease. It's not like it is now where you have the daughters of a very conservative president going off to Africa to help AIDs babies. Back then it was seen as a plague on homosexuals, druggies and others felt to be "undesirables." I didn't buy into it ever, but back then I was in the minority - especially as a mostly conservative person.

The Under Secretary of Defense committed suicide since he was homophobic and was told by his doctors that a computer blood test confirmed he was infected with the AIDS virus and that there was no chance a mistake could have been made. We find out later that the Praetorians altered his medical data to show he had AIDS when he in fact did NOT have the AIDS virus after all. We can conclude this since his autopsy confirmed there was "No HIV Found" and his autopsy said he was misdiagnosed.

Well, lets not forget why his data was altered - the Praetorians did it because he was going to vote against the "Gateway" security software (or some negative move against that group); Gateway was owned by the guy, Jeff Greg, who ran the Praetorians.

At the time this movie was made it was pretty much assumed that those with HIV were homosexuals. It was revealed that he was homophobic, so basically he was going to be considered gay by everyone he knew.

Kinda hard to think that way today, but I remember seeing an Eddie Murphy comedy routine where he made the 'joke' of being diagnosed with AIDS. He says 'What do you mean I got AIDS? I aint no homosexual' to which the doctor says sarcastically 'Sure you're not a homosexual'.

The aids/homosexual issue was really shoehorned in with the aids diagnosis, supposed homophobia and (aids themed) health care demonstrations.

You don't have to be a homophobe to commit suicide after an aids diagnosis, especially if you're a politician. It's life- and career-destroying.
