intriguing bad film that doesn't give the audience what it wants

I like that this movie stars David Caruso, the worst actor ever, in a thankless role paired with Samuel L. Jackson's creepy bleeding eye, doing undercover work for pretty much no real reason for corrupt police... already you have a stupid ridiculous premise... the fact that Caruso the ugliest bastard alive gets to go around and "be a cop" and the fact that apparently women actually like the guy is ridiculous as hell... the fact that he spouts all these growly scowly one liners is SO ridiculous... he is a piece of f_ucking WOOD, "shut YUP!" / "i'm right here. talk to me." with hands on hips like a little queen. GOD. I hate this film.

Yet am intrigued by it, Nicolas Cage is being the crap out of dude at the end and doesn't get killed like in most cop movies, simply arrested, he'll be out of jail in a week... was it just me or did Cage look and act COMPLETELY different in this film? He's always intense and awesome but he was a MONSTER in this film, a huge insane dude... where did that come from? Where did his facial hair come from? It had to be Nicolas Cage's brother. Or hell Francis Coppola.

Helen Hunt dies. No explanation. Dude beats a guy half to death in garbage yard over "Vinnie Passo". No explanation. Bad guys do bad thngs. Don't get punished. Caruso doesn't have an onset accident that results in death or at least retiremenet from acting.

The audience was left wanting more. The stupid subplot threads about Ving Rhames hating red cars and apparently being an FBI agent for some unexplained reason... what was even the point?! Then he was framed to have coke in his pocket. Like $2000 of coke in his pocket to make it seem like he was "corrupt" I GUESS?! DUDE HAS A BULLET IN HIS HEAD, WHO CARES ABOUT THE REST.

All the audio taping stuff. Just a dumb film. Yet I've seen it 500 times.

SPOILER ALERT!

I agree, can't stand Caruso, his performance was cringe worthy.
I think Rhames character's hating the color red, was in reference to the "red headed step child" -even though, Caruso's hair is really orange. Even the fake blood was orange...
I didn't see $2000 worth of cocaine, junior slipped a small vile into the federal agent's pocket, certainly not 2K worth.
I was surprised when Hunt's character was dead, the crash didn't seem dramatic enough. But I was happy to see her home-based another over rated actress.

"Bad"? I think you mean B.A.D...Balls, Attitude, Direction.
You should give yourself an acronym, 'cause it helps you visualize your goals.

I didn’t buy Cage as an underworld heavy. He was entertains sure, but not convincing.

I think they were confused with what they wanted Caruso’s character to be. At the start he was convincing enough as the reluctant thief who was doing a favour for his brother. But then we’re meant to believe he is also a hard man. And it fails.

The film is fun but it’s not great.
