Is there no such thing as dual citizenship?

My roommate was asking me about this after the movie and I nor our other friends know. Obviously it was important to change her citizenship to where she was going to spend her married life, but do you really have to be placed in that position of limbo? Can't you be both?

I hope that's not a dumb question, but we thought you could have dual citizenship.

The USA has birthright citizenship so they would have to allow for dual citizenship and they do allow for it.

My boyfriend has dual citizenship for America and Ireland. His grandfather was from Ireland, his father got dual citizenship, and after a bunch of paperwork, the boyfriend managed to get it. One of my cousins, though, is a citizen in four countries: Ireland, England, Canada and now America. She was born in Ireland, raised in England for a number of years, then they moved to Canada, and finally, she married and American and got her citizenship here.

"Oh my God! You put a living room where the crack den used to be!"

My uncle who was born in the US and moved to Denmark 50+ years ago has dual citizenship. Plus his two kids that were born in Denmark, have dual citizenship in the US and are able to vote in our elections.
