Why is this film so under rated?

The first time I saw it I was obssessed with it and then I watched the anime which is great. I just got a copy of it on DVD the other night. LONG LIVE GARY DANIELS FOR DOING A GREAT ROLE!!!!!

reply

um, wow.
not too sure.
maybe because Gary can kick like the wind, but he CANT ACT.

reply

If you consider a film 'under-rated' then the most logical reason is that you have low standards.

On a caertain level you'll probably get a lot more enjoyment out of life.

reply

The BBC evidently love this film. Its been shown on the 9th of December again!

Man, this movie is raping the FoTN/HnK franchise.
Read the Graphic Novels!

I happen to like it as well.
Best B-movie I ever seen. Sure they did a few silly things..
I consider myself to be a fan of the original anime =)

i am going to say this right now, before making a topic about something.

this movie is so fcking bad. not cause of just daniels, or that guy that is now in the saw movies play as shin. but because it wasn't really based on anime. people that like the anime, and read the manga, is going to tell you that this film is bad, because they are fans of the show back in the day (and i am still the fan of the series to this day) not to mention all of those bad acting, bad script, bad effects and its even more cheezy than the anime itself... yeah, it pretty bad. not only that, its only based on the freaking shin arc. though if the movie did bad on the first short arc, then what makes you think it would make it better if it has raoh, toki, rei, yuda, souther, falco, reiga, shuu, hyo, and hell, even kaioh. its just going to get worst. and the movie itself does it justice.

now, if you thought this movie is bad...

and for those of you who thought this movie is good (i know i came late...but whatever.)

then take a look at this..

I gotta agree,

it is by far the best post-apocalyptic, kung fu, exploding head movie starring Downtown Julie Brown, Big Van Vader, and Rufio.

At the very least the second best.

i caught part of this on cable several years ago and it's never left my mind.

i was laughing AT it instead of with it though.

seems like a good movie for Mystery Science Theater 3000 to riff on.

I don't think it's as bad as everyone says, but it does get boring at parts.

Pros:
.They keep it in the nature of what the show was about.
.Gary was an alright Kenshiro, but it would have been better if he were played by an Asian actor.
.I liked that they made Bat/Bart into a fighter instead of just comic relief.
.Dante Basco. Just Dante Basco.
."You are already dead." Though, I wish he said it more.
.It was pretty damn violent. Not so much as the show, but still pretty damn violent.

Cons:
.The fact that they killed off Bart is my biggest problem. Though, he was kind of annoying in the anime, this version of Bart was more likable.
.The white actors. I can understand Shin, because come on. Would anybody think he's Japanese?
.The fighting is toned down.
.Ken's scars look like pepperoni slices.
.They changed Lyn's disability. It's not that big a deal, but it was annoying.

i also love this movie :D its cheesy and bad in a good way :D

reply

Nah this movie was disgustingly bad. If it were at least on the level of something like Van Damme's Cyborg then I'd at least be able to enjoy it in a low budget cheeseball way but unfortunately it's not even that. This actually made the live action Guyver movies look golden.

With the exception of Dante Basco this movie was pretty good. Gary did an okay Kenshiro, though they should've just called him Ken. Costas looks like the live version of Shin. Seriously, it looks like the character was modeled after Costas himself.

reply

I was also surprised by how much Costas looked like Shin (minus the blonde hair). If nothing else he certainly has a face that looks like it was drawn by Tetsuo Hara. I think its all in the chin.

There were parts that I thought were effective overall (I liked the design of Shin's palace in Southern Cross, particularly the propaganda posters and the shot of the submarine on the sands), but so much of it seemed to take place indoors or in small sets, whereas the manga/anime are always these sprawling cityscapes and deserts that seem more interesting. Obviously they didn't have the budget for it, but still everything seemed a little too clean in some ways (I'm thinking of the circus cage Bat was locked in when Kenshiro saved him).

I know some people probably like Dante Basco (or Rufio as I still call him) but I've found him insufferable since seeing him in Hook when it came out. He never makes an effort to hide that jive/street attitude.

reply

Because it was basically mickey mouse childish comic book trash

reply

its underrated because it just isnt verry good the fight scenes are shot really badly especially the last fight scene even Gary danales thinks so, the sets are really cheap looking you can see the corners of the backdrop in some scenes,

to much stuff was altered from the manga/ anime like lin being blind bat being killed jagi being re names jackle and being played by Chris Penn, that scene with Malcolm McDowell as a zombie WTF is the point in that scene, and the scene when ken has that little tantrum and goes no i dont want to be fist of the north star boo hoo ken is ment to be a badass not a cry baby that didnt want to be kung fu Jesus, poor direction bland color pallet poor soundtrack

Gary danales muddled accent and his verry wooden acting he can do better than this ,poor effects, only 2 head explosions in the whole movie, ken taking a long time to take out like 3 guys, shin bleeding fire WTF, other aberrations to the plot that make the story make no sens, awkward comedy from bat,

shall i go on this film is poor not only as a fist of the north star adaption but as a stand alone movie , it alienates fans of the manga/anime and viewers watching it without any knowing of the source material

i saw the anime 1st and this a few years later and i didnt even notice it was ment to be bassed of fist of the north star until someone told me and i was shocked when they did

its a shame they never made the sequel that was going to be directed by steve wang who directed the guyver movie and drive it would of at least had some cool fight scenes and garry would of been able to show us some real fight scenes
