Richard Gere

Yesterday,I watched this wonderful film for the first time. Now, after having seen some films with Richard Gere, it was not so easy to see him in a historic role. What feelings did you have? Could you see Richard Gere as Lancelot immediatly or was he still the man, you knew from other movies?

reply

I did not think Gere was a good choice for this role. I thought Lancelot was supposed to be a little rough around the edges, and Gere is too polished for that... no doubt he is attractive, but he does not have the primitive sexuality Lancelot should have had. I do agree the Sean Connery was the perfect king though.

Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense.

Gere gets points here for not attempting a British accent a la Kevin Costner's dire attempt in Robin Hood:Prince Of Thieves, but still...stinkeroo. Gere works best when he's pushing against his public persona as in the excellent Internal Affairs.
He's a good actor, but cringingly miscast here. Mind you, he's working with a shocker of a script, and director Zucker is way out of his depth. One of the '90's worst films, right down there with another Gere film, Pretty Woman. Argh.

Watched this last night and Gere as Lancelot must be one of the most chronic examples of miscasting in the history of cinema. Surely it would have been better to have gone with a successful young actor of the day rather than an old fart like Gere. He was 46 when he made it!

He almost seemed to have wandered in from a different movie. no attempt at an accent, he just came across as too modern. ok, the fairytale nature of the film meant you couldn't take it seriously (I've never seen a cleaner representation of medieval times!) but Gere made it worse rather than better.

The blame lies squarely with Zucker who should have stuck to low-grade comedies and sentimental pap like Ghost.

Only when you compare this film to King Arthur (2004 version with Clive Owen, no classic in itself) that you realise how terrible it is.

At first glance I wasn't crazy about Gere playing Lancelot, but as the film went on I thought he played it very well. Think it might be one of my favorite "king arthur" movies.

I never thought Richard Gere was sexy. No movie has ever changed my mind about it.

i think he was awesome in this movie, better than old british guy who played Arthur

probably his best role since i usually don't like his other movie roles

I like Gere better in modern timeline films. He didn't have what it takes in my opinion to pull this one off.
