Academy was right in giving the best actor Oscar to Nicolas Cage....

Sean Penn may be a better overall actor than Cage but Cage's performance in Leaving Las Vegas was way better than Sean Penn's performance in this movie.

This is not Sean Penn's best acting. He was better in his other movies.

I got to admit that Penn is a way better actor than Cage in general. But cage is talented, Just in bad movies. And i think Penn's performance was perfectly executed, And way more intense than cage's in LLV. Penn deserved this Oscar. (And not for Milk)

Was the pun intended? I have only seen Cage's film once and wasn't greatly impressed. I would need to see again; but life is too short, and at the time I wanted Penn to win and I suppose I would still hold that notion.

I have to disagree. I never did understand why LLV was so lauded or Cage's performance in it so féted. Anything less realistic as a portrayal of a man drinking himself to death is hard to imagine.

Penn is capable of chewing the scenery ( Mystic River for eg) but in general is a far more talented and nuanced actor than Cage - who was great in things like Con Air or Moonstruck but limited in anything serious . Penn was certainly more deserving of an Oscar for Poncelet in DMW, a complex and largely unsympathetic role.

Hard to argue with that. Both great performances.
