The mother of those two black kids

That mother of those two black kids, that pulled them out of school simply because they were bringing home too much poetry and actually learning things, had to be the dumbest parent in the world. What did she think school was? That scene always upset me because those two boys were happy to actually learn something, Then she catches an attitude with Ms.Johnson for actually caring about the boys future.

The scene was supposed to upset you. It shows that a lot of these kids have bad parents, though Callie and Raul's parents seemed to be caring and responsible.

Whilst maths is a practical skill that can help one with every day life, poetry is way more than just 'weird talking and shit". In fact, comprehension of the written word helps us understand the world around us. It aids in the development of the mind, encourages critical thinking skills and enables us to articulate our needs and wants in a way that can lead us toward success. The world can be a confusing and scary place, filled with frightening and intimidating people. Having the tools needed to navigate difficult situations and knowing how to express ourselves eloquently can be the difference between failure and success. Not to mention that reading someone else's words and stories can make us feel less alone and misunderstood. Books, music and the spoken word are just as important as science and mathematics.
