Watched 2 eps: what on earth is good about this show?

I'm sorry, but it's one of the worst animated series I've ever seen.

I'm not going to flame without giving reasons either:
1. The voice acting was terrible. It was flat, disjointed, and generally on par with low budget dub-overs. It's not the worst I've heard but it's pretty bad. The voice acting alone almost made me stop watching ep1 after 5min. People say things, but they don't actually seem to have any emotion behind what they say.

2. Plot is disjointed. In some series, this is a good thing, and it can be done well. Not in Aeon Flux. Here, it instead feels like the writers simply didn't know what they were doing. No, it's not a case of "I didn't get it." I could tell what they were trying to do. The problem is that they failed horribly, instead coming off as a chain of lame disconnected cliches (especially in the dialog. I was groaning with every cliche'd line)
Basically, yes, I see what people are trying to pass off as hidden meanings and what not. Again, the issue is that it failed. It reminds me of arrogant artists who make something and then tries to puff it up by making all kinds of psychobabble-like claims. I've seen shows that actually pull off the symbolism, and there are weird shows that I like (see: Kaiba), but this is just crap.

Animation was done well, but definitely not my tastes. However, that's a matter of opinion and the intended effect was actually achieved in the animation, so I won't hold that against it.

But people... please tell me what the heck you see in this show. All I see is someone shoving poop in my face and demanding that I call it gold. I could only stomach 2 eps before I had to shut it off in digust - and again, I'd like to stress I *did* understand what was going on, it really wasn't complicated like many here seem to claim. By the end of each ep it was pretty clear what had happened and why, and by thinking about it for a few more minutes you could see what they were trying to do. It wasn't really original either, unless you've only ever seen crappy hollywood flicks and don't read books.

i am currently watching it myself. I probably would have enjoyed it more watching it late at night back in the ninety's as a kid. I do agree it is disjointed, but i don't know if it's cliche-- pretentious perhaps but i like it. The voice acting is very reminiscent of ninty's late night cartoons so i like the nostalgia factor it gives me.

To me, the series really starts to pick after the third episode. Personal favorites being:
A last time for everything
Reazuire
Ether drift theory
The Purge
End Sinister

I enjoy the series because of how unique the art direction and music is. Also every episode is very thought provoking, and can be interpreted in countless ways.

What the heck I see in this show:

1) Absolutely astounding animation. For early 90's, this is superb.
2) The disjointed plot. Seriously. It's supposed to parody the lack of continuity between action movies, whilst simultaneously leaving it up to you to interpret.
3) Interesting character, creature, setting and gadget design.
4) The way they push boundaries. The way they introduce things link foot fetishism and bondage into a relatively mainstream cartoon is really something.
5) The ambiguity of the 'hero' archetype. In the shorts, the character we root for often dies, or is portrayed as incompetent.
6) The whole show has this really cool, disturbing atmosphere to it.
7) It's confusing. I like to think about things. When I'm not in the mood to mull it over, I still have some stunning visuals to gawp over.
8) There'll never be a show, or at least, cartoon, more imaginative than this.

And THAT'S why I like this show.

I totally agree with all these statements as being the distinguishing characteristics of AF!

Good post.

Exactly.

It's always after I lose things that I realize how very significant the things I've lost are.

I felt this way when it was on TV in the 90's. Actually I never saw much and it confused me. It just seemed like an excuse for a weird, kitchy show.

But watching it recently I'm amazed by how different it is.

You're right that the lines are cliched. "You're skating the edge" / "I am the edge"
You're right that the voice acting is flat and dispassionate.

But there is a lot of pathos for the characters on the show. Watch Ether Drift where the scientist is dying but he still has to save everyone else. And the stifling terror of being inside that disintegrating cube. Or Demiurge where everyone is falling in love with glowing blue creatures. They go out of their way to make all the people seem really nice, but, like you said, they have that flat personality and then they fail. And it's tragedy.

The other thing is the sheer inventiveness. In Demiurge they have window coffins (like 2001 space odyssey) hanging from the ceiling by chains. It makes no sense but it looks so cool. Or the tower that's anchored by a cable up into the sky. Every ep is packed with stuff like that.

Just because it's "obvious" doesn't mean you're not getting it. Maybe you are.

I loved the series. Luckily i caught it when it was shown on Liquid TV. Its a completely different style of animation. I love the designs in the series and its surreal atmosphere to the whole thing.

The plots although sometimes incoherent are perversely engaging and the futuristic setting is imaginative and disturbing.

Its a series you can watch again and again as it takes multiple viewings to sink in. I love it. Its funny, sexy and beautifully made.

I am curious as to what is THE best, or at least one of the best animated series you have seen. (You appear to be an expert, so obviously you must have seen hundreds if not thousands of animated series to educate the rest of us on which ones are better)

I can see why people have this kind of opinion on the show, but to say that the voice acting was terrible is too much of an exaggeration. How many animated series can you name that carry the same heavy themes with similar situations and/or characters which have great or better voice acting? Like I stated previously, which specific animated series can you contrast this show with that could help to back up your claims?

2. Plot is disjointed. In some series, this is a good thing, and it can be done well. Not in Aeon Flux. Here, it instead feels like the writers simply didn't know what they were doing. No, it's not a case of "I didn't get it." I could tell what they were trying to do. I assume by your repeated use of the word "disjointed," you are saying that the show's dialog and overall plot was incoherent. The fault then isn't with the show's writers or voice actors - it's with you; IT IS the case that you "didn't get it," otherwise you wouldn't interpret the majority of the show as "disjointed." Most viewers were/are able to grasp the situations and probable meanings of the show, yet complaining about its lack of unity or connection reveals just how little you actually understood of it. You repeatedly claim you "got" the show's intention, yet that's impossible if it was too disjointed. If you can't see the contradiction with your own statements, then you are a lost cause.

Also, you lazily use the word "cliche" without giving specific examples of dialog in which you found to be common or unoriginal. Care to be insightful and share specific lines? And what "hidden meanings" did you think they were trying to pass off? And in what ways did they fail? It's really easy to spew out this kind of criticism without backing it up.

Lastly, which shows have you seen that are able to pull off this "symbolism" you speak of?

But people... please tell me what the heck you see in this show. All I see is someone shoving poop in my face and demanding that I call it gold. I could only stomach 2 eps before I had to shut it off in digust - and again, I'd like to stress I *did* understand what was going on, it really wasn't complicated like many here seem to claim. Not sure why it matters what other people see in the show, or why they like it. How does that affect your opinion of the show? Are you going to be swayed by what others think and say? Does it really take a bunch of strangers for you to give something a second a chance?

I am certain that no one is demanding you say the show is "gold;" when you come to this forum to post your complaints about the show, don't expect people to instantly respect you or your opinion. You should have enough common sense that most people are going to defend the show against people like yourself who go out of their way to post their disdain for an animated series.

By the way, you state that you could only stomach two episodes before turning it off - does that mean you did not watch the entire series? If that's the case, well then your whole argument about it being horrible and the worst animated series falls apart.

The fact that you say the show wasn't really original further demonstrates your poor judgment, and once again you fail to provide any evidence which would support this. You used Kaiba as an example of a show that's weird which you liked - would you claim that show is more original or that it didn't recycle numerous Sci-fi plots and ideas possibly even from Aeon Flux?

I actually really liked the voices (that is Aeon and Trevor--the extras were not good). Aeon may have seemed flat but I think she sounds affected. Despite being very sexy and coming from a "free" land Bregna, (and thus you'd think would seem like a free spirit) she's quite disciplined and emotionless/emotionally reserved most of the time. Even when she IS being sexy/seductive, it's usually because she's being manipulative and it comes off as cold. In a sense she's not emotionally free. She sounds aloof and mostly unemotional.

And of course she sounds quite caring in that clone episode when she wants to stay and live with Trevor.

That's why Trevor is a great foil. Though he is supposed to be the "bad guy" he's actually quite emotional many times during the series.

As for cliches, I really don't think so. You'd have to dig up some comparisons between this and some other media for me to buy that one. That's one of the main reasons why I watched it because it was so different than everything else that was on TV.

Seriously what's wrong with disjointed storytelling. It's not like people doing do that (Lynch, Tarantino, etc.).

I just finished watching the third series over a couple of weeks as bed-time stories. Like in a previous post, I first saw Aeon Flux on Liquid TV in the 1990s. The radically different style back then left a lasting impression. I remember her eyelashes turning into some sort of venus fly trap and snapping on a fly.

But I can appreciate what was said in the OP. The series did have a bit of repetition. I would class it as like an animated comic strip.

For the record, I rated the series 8/10.
