4K looking good

Big upgrade from the blu. Enjoyed revisiting this film, it’s a strong debut from Jan De Bont but it needed some script adjustments.

Apparent Fox demanded more off-bus action sequences. The lift opener works well, but the subway ending drags. I’d have preferred keeping it on the bus, throwing in more obstacles.

The passengers were poorly written and came across as one-dimensional cyphers. Compare this to Die Hard where every character is somewhat intelligent and well rounded, even the concierge guy cracks some jokes. Only Annie and the dude from Ferris Bueller felt real.

Same with the captain, he was a yelling asshole. Look what that actor did as Miles Dyson with a better script and some nuance.

The jump - all it needed was a scene showing the cops trying to manufacture a ramp to help the bus cross the gap. It would make sense and explain why it suddenly launched facing upward 🤦🏻‍♂️

Jack Travern needed a bit more definition as a character. Some more quirks and imperfections would have rounded him out. Hearing that Joss Whedon wrote the final script you’d expect some of the complexity that makes, say, Tony Stark so compelling.

All that said, Speed still delivers as a riveting high concept adrenaline shot with likeable leads and Sandra Bullock playing a hot as all hell girl next door before she went all ‘strong independent woman’ 🙄
