Nairn Vs. Hogan

I've been watching Sharpe since it first appeared on TV back in 93' and ever since i first saw Hogan i loved the character but over the years it's always annoyed me they swapped him out for Nairn. And i hated him i did, there's just something about him i did not like. They never did explain what happen to Hogan unless i have missed something after 20 years of watching this series over and over again. In my honest opinion Hogan should never of been replaced whats everyone's thoughts on this?

Hogan has to be one of my favourite characters. I loved him in the books and I was very impressed with Brian Cox's version of him. I believe he had other work commitments and that is why he was replaced. It's a shame really. I would have loved to have seen him in Honour. I like the idea of him talking to Wellington about the possibilities of Sharpe breaking into a convent.

I like Nairn well enough. In some cases I may have resented his presence, especially in Company and sometimes during Honour (I don't know why but I really like Leroy being the one to break up the duel. I wish he had stayed too), but for some reason I really liked him in Enemy. That is both the book and the T.V-film.

So really, while I would have loved more Hogan on the screen and I would say he was the better out of the two, I'm alright with it as I can re-read the books and get a healthy dose of Hogan. :) Out of all the people who replaced Hogan I think Nairn was the best.

Edit: I recently purchased the Harris video diaries and had a marathon last night. I think it was in ep six that it was said that Brain Cox, understandably, refused to sign on to season two (they filmed them three episodes at a time)due to the appalling conditions during filming in Crimea. He wasn't the only Sharpe actor to do so.

I wondered why some of the actors portraying the riflemen dropped. I figured they all couldn't have had other work at the same time.

I'm sorry Crimea wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.

It was really bad conditions. IIRC, some of the hotels they stayed in didn't have plumbing, or even running water.

The actor who played Cooper got himself fired over complaining about the problems.
