What I've always wondered is how David went from being physically unable to carry out dismembering Hugo's body, to then repeatedly bashing Hugo's head in with a hammer with such anger. Did he get a taste for brutal assault once he got started?

shareOnce he’d crossed the line into criminality, mutilation and dismemberment he was psychologically damaged and needed more of the trauma, the same way Christopher Walken developed an obsessive taste for Russian Roulette in The Deer Hunter, the same way sexual abuse victims become slutty.
Perhaps the trauma haunts them and they think they need to go ‘through’ more of it to become free of it.
