Question about the editing

So the movie obviously has a very unique and unusual timeline. Was this completely planned in advance or did they decide on this in the editing room?

I think it was planned from the script.

It was planned. Nobody writes a script and then decides to play with the order for kicks. The story is told in this order because each chapter ends with a character completing an arc. So it works like most stories. The chronology is moved around in order to accomodate this so that the flow of the movie works. The actual ending scenes would be Vincent getting killed and Butch riding away.

I think 21 Grams was written in order but edited into the mess that it is. Not sure if the idea was deliberate from the get go.

Irreversible was also shot chronologically and then edited to play backwards, though obviously that was planned

Couple things I love about the timeline and edit in general:

1. the last sound we hear from technically the last scene of the story is Zed's chopper.. and is the first sound we hear during the definition of pulp right before Pumpkin says "forget it.." pretty cool
&
2. when the song Miserlou switches to Jungle Boogie @ music supervisor credit I always wonder if that's also to signal a rift in the timeline aka now we go back to the beginning while retuning the radio
