Why Forrest Gump 2 never got made

By all accounts, the success of Forrest Gump was a major fluke. It was adapted from a novel that was far from friendly to a general audience, and the project had to be passionately shepherded for over a decade by producer Wendy Finerman. Her long bet paid off when the film earned almost $700 million worldwide—a number that, in Hollywood, almost always guarantees a sequel. There was a follow-up novel, Gump & Co., already written and ready to adapt, so why didn't Hollywood double down on what seemed like a sure thing?

I never thought there should be a Forrest Gump 2.

They were attempting to put the sequel together, even working on a screenplay. Then Tom Hanks said that he absolutely refused to do it. The project kinda withered and died when the main actor won't return for perhaps his most iconic roll.

It's a shame. The kid playing his son became a well-established actor. Of course the movie would need to be set in at least the early 2000's to start off

A sequel would drag down the first one. They already left out a lot in the movie from the books. But that wasn't enough. All things that Forrest was influencing, history things, were already enough to be believable as it is in the movie. Doing more there would ruin everything.T. Hanks best not ever lets himself get persuaded to do a sequel - which he still could agree to. As older as more of a time span they could cover. ---Lincoln Lee: I lost a partner.Peter Bishop: I lost a universe!

From what I understand, they were in the process of making a sequel where they would cover historical events from the latter part of the 1980s and the 1990s. Then the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 changed the world and made the previous two decades seem irrelevant to this new reality. If you recall, prior to 9-11 the United States was enjoying years of peacetime prosperity. The country was focused on moral issues like too much sex in media and Bill Clinton having an affair with his intern. Then the sudden attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, where close to 3000 people lost their lives, made those issues seem quite petty in comparison. How then could a sequel to Forrest Gump be made when the country was more interested in the dangers of global terrorism than in stains on blue dresses?

I agree. Though that's not why I wouldn't want to see a sequel. This was a good movie and frankly I don't think there's any way to top it. Plus what made it interesting was the fact it was a mentally slow person being able to succeed in a lot of really unique things. Because Forrest Jr. is smarter than his Dad, it seems less interesting to make a sequel about him. Plus you're right. Frankly I don't find history of what went on in my child hood in the 90s as interesting as some of the events this movie covered from before I was born.

I'm personally fine with no Forrest Gump 2. It would most likely not been as good as the first and could've hypothetically been bad.
