What was Meredith trying to achieve with her decisions?

So she supposedly made the changes to cut costs to make the company look better to it's buyers and to give the Malaysian government some relief. Taking over someone's responsibility without their approval or permission is completely out of line. How was she herself supposed to benefit from this apart from a "Thank You"? Her decisions ultimately cost her career.
