Much thanks Justin.
I will look into those

There's also the documentary "The Confessions of Robert Crumb".

Also, did you ever see the movie "American Splendor" about another eccentric underground comic artist and his wife? It's a movie, but there's also a little documentary on the DVD.

theres a great doc on thelonius monk. "straight, no chaser" i think its called.
very eccentric, mental issues as he aged. incredible musician

I just watched "You're Gonna Miss Me" which is about musician Roky Erickson. Amazing, great film. Somewhat similar to "Crumb" in its exploration of a very damaged and disturbed but highly talented family. Also, there's real wit and insight demonstrated by the film makers in how they tell the story. Highly recommended.

I find eccentric people most fascinating.
Apart from the titles already listed by other posters I would like to add:

Dancing Outlaw
Vernon,Florida

I also stumbled upon these guys the other day while browsing wikipedia:
(If only there was a documentary about them...)

Yeah - a really bizarre story, that one. The Collyers are the subject of E. L. Doctorow's new book "Homer and Langley," due out next month -- maybe the publicity from that will prompt someone to make a film.

Although, I doubt there are many/enough video recordings of the brothers available, without that a documentary probably wouldn't be very interesting.

At least if you already know all the info from reading about them.

So, yes a film with the right cast and director could be very interesting indeed.

Check out "Rocaterrania." It's a new documentary, but it definitely reminded me of "Crumb".

You should definitely check out "In The Realms Of The Unreal." This is the fascinating story of Henry Darger.

Also, "Little Dieter Needs To Fly" by Herzog is tremendous. "New York Doll," from a couple of years ago, is also splendid.

reply

Herzog is wonderful, isn't he? The film "My Best Fiend" mentioned by the original poster is also by Herzog - on the subject of Klaus Kinski. Just an amazing film. And while I don't know if you'd call Herzog eccentric himself necessarily, there are a couple of documentaries *about* him that are definitely worth watching. They're both by Les Blank. One, "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe," records Herzog cooking and eating of one of his shoes in fulfillment of a dare made to another director. The second, "Burden of Dreams," is a full length documentary showing Herzog's incredible single-mindedness in getting the film "Fitzcarraldo" completed depite almost insurmountable problems. The first is included as an extra on the Criterion Collection edition of the second.

Thanks so much for the tip about "In the Realms of the Unreal." I had read some articles about Henry Darger but didn't know there was a film. Can't wait to get hold of it :-)
