Carolyn's illness/death

There were no subtle hints whatsoever that this was gonna happen.

My first reaction to seeing Carolyn sick was "What the Fluck?!".

When I first saw this I really thought the movie was gonna have a happy ending (even though it does sorta, everyone moves on with their lives and live life happily)

I was hoping the family got wealthy or something, having Woody's career take off.

Clinton learned to be more mature/respectful and begun to get along better with Carolyn and Troy.

Woody and Carolyn stop bickering and be more loving to each other.

THAT would've been a good ending, not killing off one of the three major characters, out of the blue.

There's also the part after she wakes up the kids with a hissy fit, slapping and yelling at them. They all end up pushing each other down the stairs while the father tries to hold her and calm her down. After it's over, you can see her sweating and huffing with a look of severe pain on her face, probably signifying the weakening of her body. It seemed to take her a while to recover and get up, clearly indicating that something is wrong. A healthy mid to late 30-something, especially one as feisty as she, would have recovered more quickly.

Remember being a kid? Remember not knowing that kinda stuff? The entire film is from a 10yr olds POV. Hence the use of widescreen lens(but not film) for her visit with her Aunt. Disoriented journey...

The film is basically a series of vignettes, it's edited in a way that makes it seem as everything happening at once. No time frame was necessary because as a kid, we dont have one. Its just life. So when her mother dies, of course SHE wouldn't notice the symptoms, therefore we're shown only very subtle moments. It was well played by Spike. Showed he has more style than folks give him credit for

you missed the point of the movie. It was seen through the eyes of the main character. they aren't going to sit down and explain to a child their mother is dying. they are too young to process it

Who's the main character? You must've replied to the wrong person

Troy is the films POV. We are shown the film thru her eyes.

It did come out of left field but they alluded to Carolyn feeling sick and worn out earlier in the film, so they did include some subtle foreshadowing. I think the suddenness of Carolyn's illness was intentional. Troy is blindsided when she comes home from her vacation and finds her mother suffering from a fatal illness. The audience is meant to feel shocked as well.

I used to be darker, then I got lighter, then I went dark again.
