We're Ross and Rachel on a break or not?

I'm sure this has been discussed a lot before... but I don't care!
Personally, I think that they were in a break, but not a 'Break-UP', so although Ross is right in saying"We were on a break" that still doesn't justify what he did.

No they were not on a break. They were broken up. Ross thought so and Rachel said so.

reply

No,they weren't broken up.Show me where Rachel breaks up with him and says that she dumps him, like Ross claims he thought. Or show me where he dumps her and tells her so. All we have is Rachel thinking that maybe he dumped her when he hung up on her refusing to listen to her and decided to fight for him.But no break up happed till she found out he cheated.

reply

You are so unbelievably dense. They broke up. Rachel said it to Monica, you imbecile.

reply

Rachel wasn't sure that they broke up.He just hung up on her refusing to listen to her,so she thought that maybe he dumped her and decided to fight for him. Fact is that no break up happened till she found out he cheated.Amazing, isn't it, how crystal clear she was,no confusion whatsoever when she dumps him, yet we're supposed to believe that she dumped him when she said she was glad he called and tried to hide and explain Mark's presence? Sorry but the writers screwed up destroying any credibility Ross's so called feelings for Rachel had and tried desperatly to save their unrootable romantic male lead and their toxic endgame couple.

reply

That's bollocks. She told Monica they broke up in the morning, before she found out about the cheating. Why you continue to ignore this just makes you look foolish.

reply

Learn to read unless you're ignoring the facts I brought up proving my point on purpose.

No break up happened before she found out. What she told Monica was "kinda broke up" proving that she didn't know if when he hung up on her, he dumped her but she decided to fight for his worthless ass till she found out he cheated, and only then the break up happened.

reply

"I don't want to get back together over the phone."

They were broken up, you imbecile. Ross didn't cheat.

reply

No, she just decided to fight for him thinking that maybe he dumped her when he hung up on her.She had no confirmation that he broke up with just the possibility and decided to act on it.And that's why she corrects him as soon as he claims that he thought that they were broken up, that she dumped him. Rachel suggested a break and broke up with him only after she found out he cheated.

reply

oh shut up already

you've been blatantly proved wrong like 3 times in this thread alone, never before have i seen someone so in denial over a (bleep) tv show relationship

reply

not even once

reply

You continue to misunderstand the term 'kinda broke up', in the context of how it is used.

reply

Immy —Think about a teenager saying to their parents, "I kinda had an accident with the car."Or "I am kinda pregnant."It is an idiomatic English usage that you may not be familiar with that is an attempt to soften what is being said, not to deny its truth.

reply

Thank you for posting this, although I think we all know that it won't change a thing regarding Immy.

reply

I think we do know that.

reply

I tried several months ago to convey the same message. There comes a time when you just figure there are better ways to self-inflict pain than beat your head against the wall.

reply

No I'm not

Yes, they were on a break,
No, they were not on a break, they were completely broken up and they both acknowledged that. They were broken up because Ross thought that Rachel was with another man, so it was not just a fight that they could reconcile from quickly. On the break or broken up issue, I refer you to imdb.com/title/tt0108778/board/view/262716652?d=262716748#262716748 and to the links in that post. As the poster said, "This has been discussed to a sick degree," and there really isn't any question about it.Don't be misled by Ross's tagline, "We were on a break." That was not the issue at the time of the break. I think it was a joke that the writers played on the audience. Quite a successful joke.
but Ross wasted no time going to bed with someone else.
You make it sound as if Ross was looking for sex. He wasn't. He tried to ward off Claire but he neither had the energy nor a good reason to do so. Rachel was gone. Their relationship was over.
but I think he should have either not have slept with Chloe,
Easy for you to say. You do not seem to be able to imagine Ross's mental state. There is no reason why he shouldn't sleep with Chloe, and he thinks it will make him feel better. It will certainly make him feel like less the victim and still desirable.
or just admitted his one night stand to Rachel when she came over to his apartment the next day.
Rachel would've reacted the same way if Ross had told her because that's the way she wants to react. And Ross had a very accurate view of how Rachel would react which is why he doesn't tell her.

but it doesn't change the fact that he gave in to Chloe's advances.
As would almost all men under those circumstances. Why do you think that Ross shouldn't have given in to Chloe's advance? Rachel is gone for the foreseeable future and is involved with another man.
Also, Rachel said she needed a break. She didn't say "we need to break up".
Ross did not end up in bed with Chloe because Rachel said, "a break from us. Please try to understand that. Rachel's calling for a break set the stage, but it was not why Ross ended up in bed with Chloe. Ross ended up in bed with Chloe because when he called Rachel's apartment right after she had called for "a break from us," Mark was there. Ross came to the conclusion that almost all people would under those circumstances and that would be correct 99% of the time. That Rachel was having sex with Mark and leaving him for Mark. A person would have to be really naïve or in denial to not come to that conclusion.Again, please try to understand. The break issue is completely phony. That was never the issue at the time. Both Ross and Rachel acknowledged that they were broken up, not on a break.
Ross: Don’t you realize none of this would’ve ever happened if I didn’t think at that same moment you weren’t having sex with Mark?
That was the issue, not something about whether or not they were on a break. That was why Ross ended up in bed with Chloe, not because he thought they were on a break.
Ross: Look, I didn’t think there was a relationship to jeopardize. I thought we were broken up.Rachel: We were on a break!Ross: That, for all I knew would, could last forever. That to me is a break-up.Rachel: You think you’re gonna get out of this on a technicality?Ross: Look, I’m not trying to get out of anything, okay. I thought our relationship was dead!
Rachel does not repeat the break thing because she knows that it's not true. She had already told Monica that they had broken up.Rachel does not deny that they were broken up, but she describes their being broken up "as a technicality."They both thought that they were broken up. You can, of course, believe whatever you want to.P. S. If Ross had not called the apartment, and he had ended up in bed with Chloe, I would agree with you. But Ross did call the apartment and Mark made his presence known.
