I really wish the entire film had stayed on par with the first part.

The first 25 minutes were fantastically moody and creepy. The rest of the film was fun and entertaining, but was hardly as scary as the beginning.

Hail to the king, baby.

While I agree the beginning was scariest, to be fair that level of fright would be hard to maintain for 2 hours.
I will say that this film is one of the very best efforts at trying this, for the whole film, that I've seen in a long long time.
The way that one never knew where this seemingly supernatural psychopath was or wasn't was terrifying!
I do wish that a little bit more of Landis' background was revealed, but the film did provide more than some people notice (listen closely to his strip club dialogue), and the ending definitely needed to be stronger regarding Julia.

But I love it all the same, I watch it quite often on DVD.

"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

The hospital scene was also great, as was the ending.

it was still better than the original that fell apart completely in the 3rd act

at least there is some pace here.
