Did Dwight have a good side at all?

When it came to raising Tobias, did Dwight have any good intentions, or was he just rotten altogether? Was Dwight trying to sabotage him and set him up for failure? Cause what I kept asking myself throughout the film was...was it even logically possible to live with someone like Dwight? Was there any set of rules you could really live by to maintain stability around him? Or was he just an overall psycho?

By the way, Dwight was pretty much drinking the entire movie. I think its safe to say he was an alcoholic.

Great movie though. Its so weird seeing a young Leonardo DiCaprio, considering how much he's accomplished, as far as acting goes. Even back then he was still a great actor. DeNiro portrayed such a hateable person so effortlessly.

If he had any good intentions towards Tobias they didn't last very long, but at least from what we see he didn't act the same way towards his own children. They seem more like kids with a strict but goofy father and not victims of abuse. But who knows since this wasn't their story. Tobias makes fun of him the first time they meet, and as we find out, Dwight doesn't have much of a sense of humor about himself. Maybe he started off just thinking he'd set the kid straight with tough love, but it turns into genuine resentment and he doesn't even want him to be a better person.
