Is it really all that bad?

I haven't seen it years but, I remember how much I liked it as a kid.
A lot of the stuff that I've since watched from when I was a kid I still think most is pretty great when I watch it again. However I did like things like power rangers..
So is this that bad?

Well thanks, that makes me optimistic.
hah yeah Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen I took kids from the daycare I worked at to that...were it anywhere near that...I would never re-watch it..I'd just stick to fond memories, I would never want them to be destroyed to that degree..

Overall it's not a bad film... quite quirky.
However none of the cast really enjoyed working with the directors who kept arguing with each other, and there was the story about a stunt man having coffee thrown all over him because he did something wrong.

And there are a new dodgy moments... one scene in particular has a light bulb shinning in camera blinding you.. lol

I put it in the same boat as Halloween 3: If you're bent on the fact Michael Myers wasn't in it, you're going to be upset, if you actually sit down and watch the movie. You might like it!

No, it aint that bad at all.

This movie is complete *beep* And I'm not just saying to run with the masses. I'm saying this as long standing mario fan. This movie has almost nothing to do with the game. Aside from the names of the characters. The goombas are 6 ft tall reptilian creatures, bowser is a human with a bad haircut, the mushroom kingdom has been reduced to something that would feel more at home in a mad max sequel and whats with the superjump boots? Anybody remember those from the games? Cuz I sure as *beep* don't. This movie was the first game based movie, and man, it shows. Not like they've gotten better over the years or anything.

I guess the biggest issue with the film was the fact that it really wasn't anything like the games, but as someone who never was too big on Mario games, I found this to be the type of "stupid fun" that hit me right in the childhood. Loved it in all of its absurdity.

Oh, You want the movie to follow the game? That would be great, with it not having a storyline and all. All it was back then was, Princess Kidnapped, go get her. You want the movie to be based entirely on stomping goombas collecting coins and breaking brick blocks?

"Hear me now! This place is cursed, damned, and yes your master is the devil!"

reply

No. What I AM saying though is that a game that has NO story essentially...shouldn't be turned into a *beep* movie in the first place. Jesus, they didn't even try to replicate the feel of the game. Everything was dark and dystopian. Nothing about this movie even remotely reflects the game.

Yet, the Super Mario Bros. Super Show somehow managed to do it for several seasons 5 years before the movie was released. If Hollywood wanted to make a Mario Bros. movie but didn't think the games had enough material for a feature length runtime, why not just base it off of the TV show?

"You want the movie to be based entirely on stomping goombas collecting coins and breaking brick blocks?"
Obviously no, since I might as well boot up the game and play that if that's what I wanted to see. On the other hand, if the visuals of the movie (characters, locations, etc.) had born any resemblance to the games, like, at all, it wouldn't have been so bad.
It'd be like if they made a Call of Duty movie that was set in the Old West, or a Bioshock movie set in medieval Europe: fans of the game would be pissed that they were promised a movie based on their favorite game and instead got a confused mess that barely resembles anything they expected to see.

Oh I know you didn't just call Turtles II horrible

This film would still suck if it was directed by Uwe Boll.

I can't beleive to 3.8/10.
It's pretty good movie, one of the best from early 90's. Great acting, great music, great chasing/action and very funny goombas. GREAT entertainment!
No! Not 3.8! It should be minimum 6.0.
My rate 9/10 'cause I get a lot of enjoyment from this movie. :)

And you are very stupid, thus why your opinion doesn't matter.

It's a fun movie that had an awesome soundtrack... actually that soundtrack was almost unreal ;D

And no matter how cheesy some scenes were, it was worth it for Samantha Mathis' smile at the end

reply

no it's not a bad movie, I thought it was great when I saw it in the cinema, I was even hoping for a sequel, it almost feels like imdb exists purely to crush my childhood memories, next thing you know they'll be saying Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1&2 sucked as well.

Its not that its a terrible movie in itself but they made such a mockery of the mario franchise when they did this movie, I think thats what turned so many people off. If they kept the same plot and everything but just removed the names along with the whole mario flavor, it probably wouldve gotten a better reputation than it does now

Exactly, it would have been better as an original movie, not as a Mario one. I mean the alternate universe was something like a cross between Blade Runner and the Fifth Element, very imaginative but nothing to do with Mario and Luigi.

I suspect if they tried to make this an original movie, it never would have gotten funded. So it feels like someone came up with a great movie idea, then tried to work in enough elements so they could call it an adaptation of a popular franchise. And the brand name connection got a studio to agree to fund it.

So overall, a decent fantasy movie that had some inspiration and promise if you forget it's called Mario. An utter failure as a video game movie.

Not a bad way of looking at it. Honestly I've seen 80s fantasy-esque movies that are worse than SMB IMO. It at least kept my eyes on the screen and, I don't know, had some likable actors and was just so WEIRD it had a certain watchability.
