Why is this movie not more popular?

I always thought is was very funny. Genuinely funny, not just stupid gags (although they do a few, but they didn't overdo it which is key). Don't get me wrong, I love all kinds of humor. Dumb and Dumber and the Naked Gun are 2 of my favorite comedies, but I like more subtle comedies like this as well. And his poems were great. Un-love-...ed? great stuff.

I gave it a pretty high rating, not a 10, but I do hope people try to raise the score. A very under appreciated movie. I don't think it did that great at the box office either, which is a shame. Maybe the marketing wasn't very good for this.

I love this movie, one of our all time favorites, still. The lines in this film have become part of the day to day vernacular in our household. One of my clues that I'm going to like someone is if I quote a line and they totally get it. (floot away, y'wee fairy!)

I think the title was a HUGE mistake...hard to say and totally misleading. I didn't want to see it at all because I thought it was a slasher movie and I don't like slasher movies, even funny ones, but my husband made us see it because we like Mike Myers. (And he has a crush on Nancy Travis.) And of course it isn't a slasher movie whatsoever! So people who wanted blood & gore didn't get any, so they weren't happy, and those that would have really liked it were probably put off because of the title.

And I remember seeing a trailer for it but only once or twice, so I don't think they put much effort into promoting it. It is too bad. It's a classic. I recommended it to someone just last week as a must-rent.

"...for tomorrow we shall die! But alas, we never do."

I like the title, as it sounds like the set-up or even the punchline to a joke, it reflects both Myer's character's paranoia and the fact that the plot keeps you guessing, etc.

I agree thought that it might not have been the best title for marketing purposes.

Totally agree with you, Diss. I'm a guy who normally runs screaming from a movie that gives off romantic comedy vibes, but I absolutely love this movie and am surprised it wasn't a bigger hit. I have a funny feeling this is one of those movies 10 to 20 years from now will truly be considered an overlooked gem, especially if Mike Myers career takes off again, which I expect to happen at some point.

Either way, I definitely liked this one, and I'm much more of a broad humor, Step Brothers kind of person.

9/10.

Wierd.

I just looked up the film for the first time here on IMDB, and was actually shocked at how low the rating is. It just seems so contrary to the way the movie is perceived here. I mean around here (Toronto, Canada), the film is considered to be a "classic" at this point. Everybody has seen it, and pretty much everybody loves it. Now, I know the movie wasn't a big hit, but I certainly never thought of it as a flop or anything. And only a 6.2/10 on IMDB? Bizarre. I would have guessed mid-to-high 7's. Maybe even an 8/10.

I always avoided this film as I thought being such an early role it might ruin Mike Myers for me, and based on a recommendation I gave it a shot. It ruined Mike Myers for me.

IMO the rating is too high. Predictable plot, poor writing, some awful jokes and Mike Myers making everyone else look good. The next person I hear say "HELL-OOO?" will be receiving a punch in the face. I must admit the character was pretty annoying to begin with, and Myers gave a similar but much more apt and fine tuned performance in Wayne's World, but having genuinely gone into this movie with high hopes I was seriously let down.

It had the misfortune to be released between Myers' two Wayne's Worlds and the first AP, which had more recognition for box office potential due to one being based off a popular SNL skit and the other involving special effects. Sigh, no justice.

It was popular twenty or so years ago. It is a middleweight comedy, not something that grows in stature as it ages.

People have some thing against Mike Myers right now. I guess he overstayed his welcome as Austin Powers. I don't know. Compared to Will Ferrill, Mike Myers is fcking Charlie Chaplin.

reply

I think the marketing strategy didn't work;

for one thing the title is very awkward. Another thing is the trailer is very bizarre; Mike Myers narrates his own trailer.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, it was a nice gap from Waynes Word to Austin Powers for Myers.

the real question should be "why is this movie popular at all?"

"HELLO?! HELLO!!" that's not a joke, that's annoying as hell.

and how many times did that stupid "there she goes" song play - like 12 times? was this movie the longest ever music video?!

reply

No doubt.

Why? I came into this game for the action, the excitement... Listen, kid, we're all in it together.
