Why does this have a low rating?

I liked it a lot, just curious?

Because people are stupid. That's all, really. No other explanation. This was a sublime film and most people just don't appreciate its nuance and pace.

I loved the actors who played in this movie but the writing-- UGH! I watched it on t.v. so had to deal with cuts and commercials, that's true enough, but I still can scarcely imagine a more more poorly-written manuscript. I keep getting the feeling that I must have missed something... I certainly didn't "get" the point of the movie.

When I first saw this movie a long time ago I came here expecting it to be revered by many, but no dice. I agree, though...this movie IS sublime. Maybe it takes the right attitude? Not saying that if you don't like it, you're wrong or have bad taste, but just saying that if it IS your bag...wow you're in for a treat. This movie is life-affecting...I've seen it about five or six times and read the original script (which is exactly the same as the movie, so don't expect anything different). I'm guessing to like this movie you have to have some sort of...artistic-ness in you. An artistic soul, maybe. Just go into the movie with an open mind and I mean, you can't go wrong.

Suggested by a news item, this film version of the Broadway play doesn't transfer effectively to film. On screen the play becomes convoluted, contrived, and unconvincing. The director has a penchant for swooping the camera from right to left to create movement. Many aspects of the story are not believable as presented: no doorman in an Upper East Side building would spit at a tenant nor allow a stranger into the building as he does twice, and the suicide of Rick is a clear plot device and not at all believable. Even the way Will Smith's character finds out so much about the people's personal life after a chance encounter in Boston stretches credulity. Not an outstanding film, though Smith is very good. Does the film demonstrate it's own thesis? Or even make it understandable? NO! And why 6? I agree with it's rating on IMDB. I'd give it a 6.

i didnt see the play (im from Argentina)

i JUST see this movie on cable, and although i found it interesting and not bad at all, i think a 7 is just what it deserves

for the most part i felt like watching a filmed theatrical play (the anthony michael hall parts were terrible in that matter, it felt completely over acted, and thats ok on a theatre were sometimes thats what it takes, because you are on the same time/space that the actors, thats no true, but on a movie?)

im studying audiovisual arts, and the truth is that every "art" (the quotes are because i think little portion of movies are pieces or art, really) has its own place. if you want to take a play to the movie screen, you have to be very carefull on the adaptation.

for example, Lars Von Trier's "Dogville" is infact a movie that plays like a theatrical play.

but this one tried to achieve the illusion of being watching something real, with real places and people. so the acting (not the actors, i blame this one to the script writer and the director) was what let it down a bit.

and that is curious, because i think who acted more natural on the movie was Will Smith, who usually sucks (i mean, the director allowed to coexist on screen two really different types of acting).

This has a 93% 'fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Don't mind the low rating on IMDB... it's also a ***** rating in most other publications.
