What year is this movie set?

Just an off-topic question, I guess. But exactly what year is this movie set in? 1930? Thanks.

It's set over a number of years between the 1930s and 1950s. The flashbacks detail the lead up to the second world war. The "present day" storyline of Stevens driving to the west country to meet Miss Kenton and ask her to return to Darlington Hall is in the 1950s.

On his desk it shows Wednesday Oct 25...that only fits 1933. Later when the PM and German Foreign Minister are there, they discuss Czechoslovakia and its annexation...1938 for certain.

The flashbacks were in the 1930s, based on all the talk about Nazis and Germany etc. The present tense is the mid-late 1950s. It was mentioned that Ms. Watson had left Darlington's manor 20 years ago.
