Basinger ended the year by teaming with the undisputed King of What the Hell Happened, Val Kilmer in the heist flick, The Real McCoy.

The Real McCoy got mixed to negative reviews and bombed at the box office contributing to the career decline of both of its stars.

1993 was a busy year for Kilmer. It started off slowly with the utterly forgettable Kim Basinger heist movie, The Real McCoy.

Basinger played a notorious bank robber who is trying to go straight after being released from prison. However, her corrupt parole office and former employer force her into pulling off one last score. Kilmer plays her love interest.

According to one exec on the set of The Real McCoy, Kilmer once became enraged when a scene wasn’t altered to his liking. Kilmer reportedly started firing his prop gun at a car.

The movie got lousy reviews and flopped at the box office.

This film is a total dud. Apparently Kim Basinger lobbied for Val to be in the film, and he took it. Producers tell horror stories about his snapping at someone to “never speak to him like that again” when he was just asked to rehearse a scene once more. Basinger accused him of sinking the movie purposefully by acting poorly. Critics savaged the movie, and audiences didn’t care. And they shouldn’t have. It’s horrible. Val plays a doofie sidekick love interest, to Basinger’s cool thief chick who has to pull off one more job… and it’s just bad. He’s terribly miscast and obviously not interested in the material. A loss for all involved.

Meanwhile, Basinger was starring opposite Val Kilmer in the box office flop, The Real McCoy. No doubt that Sleepless would have been a better choice. But then again, Basinger didn’t really pursue a career in romantic comedies. I have no doubt starring opposite Hanks would have been better for Basinger’s career than making a lame heist movie with Kilmer. But I don’t know that Basinger would have got the same career boost out of a rom com that Ryan did. Ryan was genetically engineered to make rom coms. Basinger’s DNA was more sultry than that.
