Baseball logic: Why would a New Englander want a Mickey Mantle card

I know it was changed from Sandy Koufax, but why Mantle? Shouldn't it have been changed to Ted Williams or some other Red Sox player?

reply

It was an attachment to his father. The baseball value of them was secondary.

New England is 6 different states, not just Massachussets. New York also borders Connecticut, Massachussets, and Vermont, so for some New Englanders their teams are closer. There is a pretty good split between New York and Boston fans in New England, the whole region just doesn't root for Boston teams.

Dude be honest. It was changed because Mickey Mantle is a much more recognizable player to movie audiences. The name wouldn't ring a bell for probably 60% of americans in 1993 (and and even fewer today).

reply

Agreed! Regarding New England: people from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts are usually Red Sox fans. People from Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont are divided between the Yankees and the Redsox.

But the thing is, Stephen King is a devout Red Sox fan. If you watched the 2004 World Series you could see him anxiously watching and rooting for his team...

To for some reason have Brian pine over a Yankee card, when he easily could have used Ted Williams instead, makes little sense to me.

As a person that HATES baseball, and doesn't follow it, I know Mickey Mantle is a much bigger name than Ted Williams. With my little baseball knowledge, I would rank Hank Aaron & Reggie Jackson over Ted Williams. I have no clue how accurate that would be, but that's the point. NON-Baseball fans will get that the card is really big.

EVERYBODY who collects baseball cards, wants a Mickey Mantle

Probably because it's worth a lot. My mother, born in 1928, wishes she had kept all the Batman and Superman comics she had access to. They would have been worth a fortune!!!
