Damn Films! Whiskey on the rocks?

I love the way he goes on about blended whiskey being crap at the end of the film, as that's what the woman told him, but he says he wants it on the rocks!

No real whiskey drinker has whiskey on the rocks, as it kills the flavour. Whiskey with a little room temperature water is fine, but never on the rocks.

If he's gonna have it with ice, he may as well drink blended whiskey anyway!

reply

Real whisky-drinkers wouldn't have whiskey anyway.

Touche.

Andy wasn't a real whisky drinker or a real whiskey drinker. He didn't seem to be much of a drinker at all, in fact. That line's in there for the writers - kind of the period at the end of Andy's "character development" sentence.

It was a Balmore, I drink Single Malt 12 year old Bowmore. Scotish Whiskey. I have mine on the rocks.

Then you're not a proper whiskey drinker either.

Every person that knows anything about whiskey will tell you that ice kills the flavour.

reply

I drink it once melted so the aroma eascaspes as you drink it once its breathed

I'm pretty sure the guy who wrote the movie tended bar earlier in his life. So he probably knows about whiskey.

So why put it in the movie anyway?

Maybe it was a subtle shot at the people he's heard (and we've all heard, any of us old enough to sit in a bar) jabbering on about alcohol like they know something, despite clearly not knowing enough to drink it how it's supposed to be done best.

Or maybe he just wanted something that was cool-sounding for the character to say in the movie. I dunno.

Never thought this thread would go the distance.

Interesting though (seriously)...

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

I always have scotch on the rocks -- I don't let other people decide how I should drink anything. I even tell the bartender to put 7-up in the glass instead of carbonated water. I like THAT taste.

reply

The proper way to drink whiskey or whisky is through the mouth, down the throat. Anything else is personal taste and personal taste only.

Anonymity on the Net allows people to be their true, evil selves.

reply

I prefer to snort my whiskey (single malt, of course).

I think Sorkin was taking a shot at Johnnie Walker for some reason. He has them say something about blended ones being no good, no matter what color the label. Doesn't Johnnie Walker have red label, blue label, black label and so on?

reply

God there are some REAL snobs here. I've been drinking whiskey many years and If I have it with ice or without does not dictate whether or nor some snob considers me a REAL whiskey drinker. I wish those types would keep their damn opinions to themselves. The only ones that want to hear them is themselves.

i learned from the movie spy game. spies drink scotch. and never less than twelve years old.

I'm a Bourbon drinker, and I like mine on the rocks. It's a matter of taste, and all this yammering about what makes for a "proper" whisky drinker is just a tad bit silly.

Indeed, I'm sure any 'real whisky drinker' doesn't give one tiny spec of frog shyt about how anyone else drinks it and just shuts the fug up and enjoys it his way.

...then whoa, differences...

I think the "on the rocks" is an American phenomenon; in Great Britain even the beer in the pubs used to be room temperature; I don't know if that has changed but it was true in the late Seventies.

For me it depends on the whiskey too; as I said I am primarily a Bourbon drinker and I like it with ice, but occasionally I will drink Irish whiskey and that I will take neat.

Oh God. There's nothing more inconvenient than an old queen with a head cold!

reply

I've been in the UK in the winter, and I think the cellars are cold enough to keep the beer nice and frosty anyway lol. Not sure about the summer, but I'm guessing the cellar would still be cooler than a crowded pub above.

I'm sure when they started to artificially chill beer there would have been superior folks moaning about how that was the incorrect way to drink it too.

Depends on the whisky and depends on the mood too of course; I'll have it with ice and creaming soda if I want, and the OP can lick my furry 'nads while I do.

I'm drinking it, ergo I'm a real whisky drinker.

...then whoa, differences...

reply

OP is a moron. I drink tons of Scotch and enjoy it both straight and on the rocks. Also I have talked to many Scots about the subject and they are completely divided as to which way they prefer but almost all of them said the same thing: drink it however it tastes best to you. If you are saying ice kills the taste you clearly have very weak taste buds, because even on the rocks I can decipher between a vast array of scotches.

Snobs are annoying.

reply

unless its coffee, whatever im drinking better be COLD. thats why I would have my whiskey "on the rocks".

Oh for Pete's sake.....it's a clever bit of writing that references Andy's conversation with Tracy's mother, and it's in response to Dana's suggestion that his injury needs ice....don't take yourself so seriously. I've been a bartender for over 25 years and I don't give a damn what you drink or how,

Can you hear me?....They did this

It was a f-cking cool scene with the always wonderful Anne Bancroft though - partly because it strongly reminded of a scene in Chandler's Farewell My Lovely (I think it made it into the 1975 film as well). Even though there the focal beverage was cheap gin.

Dave Hirsch drinks blended whiskey - "Any blended whiskey will do" - because "Whiskey's a man's drink - why'ncha run home to mama..."

So, blended is fine.
