An Mei's mother was married, but after she was widowed, she was raped and her family disowned her. Was this her husband's family? If it were her husband's family, it would make sense that they were so hostile and incredulous, and said she was worthless for remarrying again so soon. But then she made that human flesh soup for her dying mother, so I figured that was her real mother, not her mother-in-law.

So who's family was so mean to An Mei. Her real family, or her husband's family?

It was her own family. They didn't believe her story that she had been raped, they believed she had gotten herself knocked up.

What I have to say about An-Mei's mother (Rose's grandmother and Jennifer's great grandmother) being disowned by her family is that you cannot ever throw your kid away no matter what.
