I'm coming around to this movie. Here's why;

Rewatched this the other night for only the second time in some 12-15 years. It's got a measly 4.1 on IMDb and is considered by many to be the worst F13 movie (that's not the greatest criticism given it's the best franchise of all time).

This movie has several things going for it;

- It's the goriest entry in the F13 franchise. The unrated cut is pretty gruesome, the special FX work is honestly great.

- It has three topless scenes, that's more nudity than several of the other entries in the franchise. A lot of the earlier entries don't actually have that much nudity, women in underwear yeah, sex scenes yeah, but actual on screen nudity is actually surprisingly low for entries 1-3 and also VI. Often it's one woman doing a topless scene.

- The comedic relief in this is actually amongst the best in the franchise. III, V, VI & X are the only ones that could be argued to be funnier. I find the humor/horror mix in this to be quite spot on actually, it's not heavy handed enough to be considered a horror-comedy but it delivers enough laughs throughout it's runtime. Creighton Duke is a blast.

- The acting is at worst mid-tier within the franchise. Could be argued to be on the verge of being a top third selection.

- Jason when on screen is good. The opening chase in particular is solid F13 work with a strong atmosphere.

- The production values (cinematography, editing, etc,) are in the upper third of the franchise. VI, FvJ and the remake are the only ones that could be argued to be 'slicker'.

- It did something different. This is part of the reason for the low rating and hate. Halloween III suffered the same fate as did F13 V for a long time. A lot of people just want Jason to stalk and stab people at CCL for 90 mins.

I saw some people argue that Jason gets as much screentime in this as he does in many of the other F13 movies... I'm not sure I'd go that far but it's true that in most F13 movies Jason is often in the shadows save for quick kill scenes until the end of the movies where you get the chase and final showdown scenes.

The issues people have with this is the body-hopping (and thus many kills being committed in some random persons body) and the expansion of the lore. I feel like if it was Jason doing all the killing in his own body that people wouldn't have such an issue with this movie.

One thing I will say it that the mid-90s is maybe a bit uglier looking than the mid-80s. People probably prefer the retro 80s fashion in the earleir entries over this 90s affair.

Also Jasons appearance is hit-or-miss. I can see why some don't like his costume in this.

I don't much care for the mythology introduced here (straightforward body-hopping would've sufficient enough). That said, this is still one of the top entries of the series. Well-paced with the best gore, fun action, humor and solid nudity - especially the tent sex scene.
