Fear of a black hat is waaayyy funnier than cb4 but more people have seen cb4. Y? Any reasons besides Chris Rock?

CB4 not only had the star power with Chris Rock and others but it was also much more widely marketed. Fear of a Black Hat didn't have anywhere near the theatre release that CB4 did. Hell I'm not even sure if Fear was released in theatres. CB4 is much more of a Hollywood type movie, meaning people who don't know *beep* think that it would appeal to a wider audience. With the main characters pretending to be gangsters and learning their lesson in the end and all that *beep*. As opposed to Fear where there isn't any of that bull*beep*. Just a hillarious movie that spoofs the world of rap, while paying homage to it at the same time. Fear definitely came off as more of an Independent film to me. But I have to say Fear is by far the superior movie. Rusty Cundieff is brilliant, and if you like Fear of a Black Hat check out Tales From the Hood.

CB4 was the biggest piece of $hit I've ever seen. FOABH all the way!

Amen to everything y'all said. FOABH is the TRUTH. CB4 can't even hold a candle to it. I don't know what's funnier, uncut FOABH, or the television edit, where they bleep out the cuss words with sound effects that correspond (roughly) to the cuss word that got bleeped out, as well as cover the actors' mouths with little animations that represent what they were trying to say as well. HiLARious.

I saw Fear of a Black Hat at the theatres. It was at the local Indy theatre.

There is not even a competition. FOABH is and always will be the funniest rap mockumentary / documentary ever. Like people say it makes fun while teaching history at the same time. Rusty was brilliant. He took PE & NWA and made a super ghetto gangsta pro-black militant group. I saw it in Cleveland at an art school. I have the DVD and love it. The extras even have extended videos for most of the raps in the movie.

Also FOABH was OUT BEFORE CB4. When I went to see CB4, I was like what?!! Not only did they try to copy FOABH, but did a $h!tty job doing it. As for great Hip Hop films, I put FOABH right up there with Wildstyle & Beat Street. Like I said it is a comedy, but if you know your history of hip hop the $h!t is even funnier.

I saw CB4 long before I saw FoaBH and it is not even close. The only memorable moment from CB4 is Charlie Murphy going through his work-out routine before having sex.

FoaBH puts CB4 to shame.

I've always enjoyed CB4. Fear is a lot different in tone and style. I would simply say both are worth owning.

reply

while CB4 was theatrically-released in early '93, it was filmed after the fact that FOABH was already completed. The problem was that FOABH wasn't released in theatres until '94, and even then... it wasn't widely-released.

FOABH will definitely always be a classic among people like us who appreciate artistic integrity.

I have never seen CB4 but i have seen FOABH like 50 times.

reply

I like CB4 but FOABH is classc to me!

reply

They are just so similar - story-wise and plot-wise.

Have more people seen CB4? I've known of it only because of Chris Rock, but I've seen Fear of a Black Hat because it use to come on HBO or Cinemax a lot.

reply

I would bet that MANY more people have seen CB4 because it had more promotion and a wider release. Like a lot of people I just happen to stumble upon Fear of a Black Hat.
