So.. C' calls him *beep* and Jane doesn't even care?

C' calls Jane's brother *n!gger* - which is an insult for all black pople, not just him - and yet she acts as if that moment is wiped away from her brain when they meet again, learning that he didn't attack her brother.

And lets get this out of the way; I'm not a black person and i'm against racism but this has got nothing to do with it.
I just found that part extremely shallow and bad written.

It was obvious that he regretted saying it. He was just a product of his environment. In the end he said he wanted to be with her regardless of what people thought.

reply

I agree. It's the one part of the film that completely does not work for me.

reply

I know right?! I kept waiting for him to apologize...but nothing.

i wish the ring had never come to me.

reply

You're right, he should have apologized, and he knew it. She knew that he knew it too, and once she heard from her brother how it went down, she was ready to forgive him. I can only thing that he did the right thing eventually, otherwise how could he feel good about himself in the relationship? Still, it would have been nice to have seen that loose thread sewn up.

reply

He did apologize at the scene of the car fire. He apologized to the brother directly before they told him to leave for his safety.

reply

Back then use of the N word didn't cause the politically correct hysteria it does now.

you can apologize but it is up to the one offended to accept the apology, DROP THE MATTER and get on with their lives.

often times that doesn't happen and sometimes with these incidents the apology can make it worse.

don't apologize: you said it, you thought it, you think it

I heard love is blind. Maybe it is also deaf.

C spoke out of anger. I guess that is easy to forgive.

reply

Love is deaf. Classic.

She probably understood because her brother was being an idiot in accusing him when he tried to help. She was like fck it this is a good guy obviously even if he said something nasty to my brother. He was obviously into black and she knew that. He was always a gentleman to her.

reply

It bothered me to start with too but I think she realised he only said it because of his upbringing and because it was a common thing to say in his surroundings. It was obvious he realised his mistake though and genuinely didn't think that way but I don't know if I would have got past it as quickly as she did if I was her

*beep* has been a bad word for a long time but it didn't have as much weight to it in the '60s as it does now. Apparently now if you say it, it's justification to be attacked. Back then it was just one of the many words like wop, *beep* *beep* etc that was used to insult a group of people.

reply

ehh... people still slip and say or do insulting things today. and the world is too sensitive to things that piss people off. and he was pushed to the edge with all that crap. why were those kids riding their bikes there anyway??? and what about the black ignorance here? you see one white boy he was the automatic one who assaulted you? what???

but she did care. did you see the look on her face when he called him that? 'oh REAlly???'

I just had a thing about how she was pissed off at C lying to her [he was there but he was the only one trying to help] but when her brother confessed and 'told her the truth' she wasn't pissed off at him. it's one thing if you are unsure who did what during the melee but for her to say 'told the truth' it indicates to us that he was lying when they confronted him the day after about it. [the kid is surprisingly spry for being beat up the day before!]

the sickest is when that altercation was going down... the smirk on his face. the face of a liar. he had the same face when c and jane came back from the date and the aftermath of that cocktail fight. same smirk.

and what about the 'get the fvk out of the neighborhood' crap? hello! if it wasn't for their kids the entire situation wouldn't have happened. all their kids got was bruises and some stitches. now these kids have to have their parents identify them with dental records.

maybe her coming back to c shows how NOT IGNORANT she really was. she was behaving better than those *beep* mothervker' shouters. she was able to leave her prejudice the door.

Yeah, him (basically) calling her a N and her just magically forgetting about it and forgiving him was unrealistic. Black people already think white people are racist and once you verbally say that to a Black person, they'd never talk to you let alone look at you again.

reply

- unless people come together, make peace, and move on. It would be a better world if people would apologize and forgive more often.

more like you'd never talk again. they'll beat you within an inch of your life!

or worse.
