Dallas Archer?

Why did Dallas Archer (May and Newland's eldest son) become Ted in the film? Was Dallas just too improbable a name? And in the book, their daughter Mary marries Reggie Chivers's son, not Larry Leffert's. The changes are surprising given how very faithful to the book the film is in all other regards.
