Airwolf, Captain Kirk, and SeaQuest DSV

I was just watching Season 1, episode 17 "Hide and Seek", and noticed they used footage from Airwolf for the attack scene about 5 minutes into the episode. Then Captain Kirk walks into the scene.

I loved the show, it just seems that if they were going to reuse scenes from Airwolf, they could have either made it less obvious, give some of the cast of Airwolf a walk-on role, or do something to give us fans a bit more of a nod to another TV classic.

Oh gods that was a bad episode.. bad, bad, bad and Shatner was mumbling his lines in what seemed like a daze. Not scary at all. His character was supposed to be some kind of bad ass.

I'm struggling to finish season 1.. It's just bad and I bought the set with all 3 seasons

wasnt my favorite episode either, and im not sure why they decided to use shatner for that episode, there were several other characters in the season that would have suited him better.

Having said that, he wasnt playing a bad-ass, he was playing a dictator. We all know from Kim Jong Ill and North Korea that not all dictators are bad-asses. Also with the whole sick child thing he was dealing with i feel like we were supposed to forget who he was by reputation and just see him as a wayward man with a sick kid.

All Dictators are just men, i think this episode was supposed to make us think about that.

Additionally I recommend the movie "The last king of scotland", its in a similar vein to what im talking about. The movie follows Idi Amin's personal physician (played by James MacEvoy) as he slowly realises what a monster his employer is. Its interesting because Forrest Whittaker's plays Idi Amin with a lovable charisma and it makes it hard to believe how evil his actions are. I truely beleive that all characters in history, be they good or evil, are dramatically distorted to extremes in the records.

I doubt hitler was much of a monster in person, and i also doubt any stories about how lovely and amazing certain heroes were either.

The only problem with that is that Airwolf takes place in the past in the 1980s many years before the timeline of the Seaquest unless someone else now uses the helicopter...

Airwolf, the helicopter, was portrayed by a Bell model 222. The Bell 222 is a fairly common civilian helicopter of which 199 examples were made. It has a follow-on model the Bell 230, which came into production in 1992, and 38 were produced.

I'll assume by 'captain Kirk' you mean William Shatner. If you ask any of the people he worked with on ST:TOS, a ruthless dictator is the role he was born to play.

Watched this episode last night and was like 'uh..wtf is that Airwolf?!' (hey at least have Blue Thunder right?) then nearly fell out of my chair when the mid 1990s era Shatner appeared(i now very vaguely remember reading in an old SF magazine back in the 90s that Mark Hamill & Shatner guest starred in SQ but had completely forgotten about Shatner being in it) ..i was like 'uh?! is that?..no it can't be..holy crap it is! The Shat in SeaQuest!!' my mind instantly thought of all the possibilities for the episode.. one on one scenes with Scheider!.. would he be another ship commander with eyes on the SeaQuest like a rival for Scheider? or one who'd gone rogue which would lead to an epic Sega games console quality CG underwater ship battle ..like the ep title sort of suggests (no he's just sum random Serbian dictator with a sick kid ..oh)

Funny how Shatner agreed to be on SQ which was like a rip off of ST:TNG (meets a remake/update of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea) but not Star Trek: Enterprise years later (maybe the same will happen again now with The Orville) ..I imagine he said yes to SQ as it was Spielberg produced and starring such a big name in Roy Schneider .plus back when they were filming the first year of SQ everyone was no doubt expecting a hit series. no one knew itd be a such a dud...and it wasn't Trek (he worth more to Trek than any other similar show so money would have to be absolutely huge and eaten up the entire budget and the role epic/very meaningful). Also Shatner probably jumped at the chance to play against type as a dictator with a sick kid as opposed to something like another ship captain which is what the fans would expect when they heard he was going to guest star from the pages of Starlog or wherever.

funny when Scheider is made aware of him in the ep you can sort of sense a 'this guy? Seriously?! I've sunk to this level? I didnt sign up for star trek!' c'mon Star Trek was never a respected thing especially to big name movie guys like Scheider. Thinking about it its kind of unbelievable that Scheider signed up as he was a star of several iconic movies of the 70s and 80s and now here he is in a star trek rip off roped into it by his old pal Steven in a sort of homage role to his past work - Jaws, 2010 (remember the Dolphin in that?) and as we know now things were about to get alot worse for Roy (season 2).. in hindsight hed have probably been better off headlining a star trek series (DS9 or Voyager) than this. In fact I just read a quote from him somewhere on here where he said something similar to that when season 2 deteriorated into SF silliness, no doubt in an attempt to keep up with the other full on SF shows of that era (something which also happened to Voyage back in the 60s).. Still it probably looked like a decent bet at first..like a no expense spared Steven Spielberg produced adventure movie with various Spielbergian traits but done as a TV show with an air of nautical realism and ILMs?..ahem..'groundbreaking' CG FX (developed from Jurassic Park/Abyss but severely lacking here no doubt due to the budget) and the pilot helmed by the Empire Strikes Back director and with major gueststars appearing later like Shatner, Chuck Heston, and even Mark Hamill ( attracted by the Spielberg connection over other SF series?) But really it was just a blatant TNG rip off (as TNG had been such a huge success and really brought back the SF TV genre in a big way) with similar characters (the genius kid/Wesley, the female Dr with a thing for the captain/Dr Crusher, Bridger/Picard & elements of movieKirk, Darwin/Data, 2nd in command/Riker & Decker who Riker was based on etc and then in season 2 you got an empath! and weird Khan type superhumans? ).

But when Shatner shares screen with Scheider there was an element of 'wow Admiral Kirk and Chief Brody or Dr Heywood Floyd or the Blue Thunder dude' (who also battled Soran) but also kind of sad as was a missed opportunity it wasn't in a Trek movie with Scheider as an Starfleet Admiral or the like
