The 2 best Sipowicz partners by far

I know everybody loved Simone but I always though his character was very lackluster. Nothing against Jimmy Smits, he's an excellent actor. It's the character I'm talking about. I never really got into them much and I skip those when watching episodes now. John Kelly and Danny Sorenson were the best by far! I hated David Caruso in CSI but I though he was great on NYPD Blue. He has a few good movies too. Ricky Schroder was also great. He was very energetic, and got the job done. Always great to watch the first and sixth seasons. The later seasons are very good too, but I think the 1st and 6th are the best.

John Kelly and Bobby Simone, never cared much for the others.

Caruso is the bomb in this. Too bad he got the big head.

Finishing season six now. I had forgotten how much i really liked Danny Sorensen!

reply

I like how Sorenson came in and wasn't suddenly best friends with everyone.

Sorenson was a bit "touched!" After he was gone, we find out his mother isn't dead IIRC! It was a weird exit out of the blue! I still don't know exactly what happened! The next time I see him, he's hosting a fishing show on ESPN! Anybody? ;-)

I recently read that the actor who played Sorenson had a real life emergency during his time on the show and asked to leave. When I find out that article I read, I'll come back and post it.

Thanks so much! ;-)

His wife suffered a miscarriage in Early 2001.

Thank you for that info.

The following was listed under the Trivia section of NYPD Blue.

Rick Schroder left the show because he suffered a death in his family and felt he couldn't work properly, so they wrote him out.

Thank you! It was so abrupt; just killed him off without a farewell of any sort! He was one tortured soul so it wasn't like I missed him! ;-/

--You're welcome. Agree, dat mob crap came from where? Then he's missing-then dead.

Danny was indeed "a tortured soul", kind of like not knowing how to be happy. Danny was also messed up over Diane. Was dat puppy love or what? Sitting outside her apartment-stalking--a Detective--glad he realized dat was not a norm.

reply

Kim has played that kind of character for well over 30 years, going back to a kid in "All My Children" as Jenny! lol!

From this to male nurse on Scrubs

Obama got 43% of the white vote, McCain got 5% of the black vote. Who's the racist again?

reply

Love the signature! Glenn Beck saying that about Obama was just too fk'n ridiculous! He's since apologized, but "where did that come from" in the beginning? I seriously thought he was back on the drugs; it was so weird and bizarre! Conservatives and Republicans were desperate to discredit this man and all they did was embarrass themselves; if it's possible selecting TRUMP as their latest standard-bearer! Why not go all the way psycho and renew covenant with Sarah Palin? ;-/

Um, black voters?

reply

Personally I couldn't stand Danny Sorenson--he was a head case. Plus Ricky Schroeder didn't look old enough to shave much less be a detective.

reply

I enjoyed Simone, Clark and Sorenson the most, just for the on screen chemistry and the way the characters were written and performed. Too bad Sorenson never got to be more fully developed as a character. It would have been interesting to see how he would have been developed by the writers and how his complex past would have been resolved or become more of an issue. I watched years ago when it was primetime and am rewatching via Audience Network, so when it flips back to the beginning I'll try to see if I can now appreciate Kelly/Caruso, but it was difficult when I first started watching. Caruso definitely was tough to watch on CSI:Miami, but I wonder if that spinoff was just poorly done in general and he did what he could with what was written.

reply

Caruso was great on NYPD Blue, it's what made him a star. I agree his character on CSI Miami was horrible and I was unable to watch because of it. I think he deserves more credit that he gets for NYPD Blue and some of his movie were great too. Yes, he has done some bad ones too but who hasn't? I think people are hard on him because he left Blue too early and got a little arrogant back then. I tend to judge actors by there acting and not there real life personality. I watch them for there acting, I don't really care about there personalities

reply

I'm gonna have to go with Simone and Clark. Ricky Schroder, of The Champ and Silver Spoons, was not mature enough to pull off Sorenson. Even now, he doesn't look old enough to do anything more than ride his little choo-choo train around his house. (Plus, my daughter and I have this theory that if someone plays a character with the same first name as their own it's likely because they are too clueless to answer to another name.) Caruso I just don't like. Meh.

She did it! She did it! The lady with the grape!

reply

Wow--that really explains Tony Danza then, doesn't it?

reply

1: Bobby Simone
2: John Clark
3: John Kelly
4: Danny Sorenson

I don't think any of them were bad and I think Sorenson gets a bad wrap cause of the way he left. Obviously we all woulda liked to have seen him developed a bit more.

To me Smits/Simone is easily #1 and my personal preference is Clark/Gosselar as #2.

reply

I'm going to agree with the OP here, but I think people either love or hate Ricky's portrayal of Danny Sorenson. I just remember at the time everyone was expecting him to fail miserably as the could only imagine him as the kid from Silver Spoons. Of course he came on and gave (in my opinion) a surprisingly strong gritty performance. Probably the best role of Ricky's career. So, I would have to agree with the OP that the first and sixth seasons were the best.

From the Friends episode "The One With the Cop": "I heard that kid from Silver Spoons is really good".

reply

Simone and Sorenson, in that order were my favorite partners for Andy.

reply

I agree, Caruso was great on this show. But there was a certain chemistry, not just between the characters of Sipowicz and Simone, but between the actors Smits and Franz. They appeared to actually enjoy being together in scenes. You can tell when watching the show, the smirks they each give each other when they deliver their lines. Just a great energy, and acting. Just check out the scene in season 12, The Vision Thing. To me, Franz is the best actor on tv in the last 20 years. I also enjoyed Rick Schroder and Mark Paul Gosselar. It gave Andy some type of redemption in not being as good of a father to Andy Jr. as he wished he could have been.
