Why did Martin lie about the parole hearing?

It is a weaker episode in my view. S8/23 "A day in May".

In the episode Martin spends the day at the prison because there is a parole hearing for the punk who shot him. Martin could have helped the guy who does seem rehabilitated and contrite get parole but says nothing. Then we get the other side of things where we realize the pain the guy's mom is in when they deny him parole.

It all happens quickly just a little side story.

What I do not understand is why Martin is secretive about it. He told Daphne he was at the track. Why did he just not say where he was?

Maybe it is a painful obligation he felt he had to do, but did not want to worry his sons or Daphne about it.
