No swearing!

Have you noticed how little swearing there is in Cracker? There's quite a lot of blo ody, boll ocks, shi t etc., but considering what an emotionally intense and violent series it is, there's not one f-word to be heard.

reply

I know I noticed that too, like you say weird you never hear the f word considering how violent the show is.Same situation with ITV's other classic 90's crime show Prime Suspect if I remember right(the newer ones had swearing but not the old).

reply

Yeah I noticed this as well. Now compare it to US crime dramas like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Dexter with the swearing!

reply

you don't really need a lot of swearing to tell a good story, infact too much swearing spoils it for me. the level of swearing in Cracker is just about right for me.

Of course, the american shows you mentioned are on cable televelevision (ok, I meant "television", but that misspelling was too funny to erase....how did I even do that?)

Anyway, cable is sort of a no man's land, censor-wise, cos you have to pay for it voluntarily, as an extra service. Regular broadcast TV, they can't/don't say anything worse than "damn", "ass" and lately, "dick". (thanks, "Supernatural"!).

I know you guys pay for all of your TV (license fee) so it may sound odd. I'm sure you have additional pay channels, so you probably already know what I mean.

reply

Never mattered because the writing was so brilliant.

And also remember that when this series was made (early 1990s), strong language wasn't very common in regular British television shows.

reply

Dang! There was more than enough to suit me. Then, in almost every episode someone's shagging someone. "Sex and death -- your two favorite topics."
