Made me physically ill as a kid
I remember seeing this when I was about ten years old and it was one of the most disturbing experiences of my life. Dad took me to see it because it starred Robin Williams and was called "Toys," so how bad could it be, right?
I was (and still am) a very sensitive person, so the idea of "war toys" and the final battle in which innocent, smiley-faced playthings are blown up over and over in close-up was highly disturbing. I remember going numb while watching this film in the theater, only to come home and end up sobbing uncontrollably once I went to bed. My Mom came into my room and asked me what was wrong--all I could get out between heaving breaths was, "The toys--they kept blowing up--blowing up the toys--why?!?!?"
Looking back on it now, I think I understand the "vibe" that Williams and Levinson were going for and the point that they thought they were making (war is bad, innocence is good). But Holy Hell was this movie the stuff of high-test nightmares back then!
"Beethoven had his critics too, Keith. See if you can name three of 'em."
