Actually, good movies like these I think came out during the 90s.

Boyz N' The Hood (That one you might know)
Original Gangstas ( And If don't care what people say, then don't worry about it)
New Jack City (That one you know about are ready)
Higher Learning (If not, then this is old)
South Central (Strong Movie)

I haven't seen this movie yet, but it sounds similar to the flow of the movie "Blood In, Blood Out" (1993) [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106469/], focusing on a group of hispanics in a rough neighbourhood through racism, drug use, jail time, violence and gradual learning.

It's not exactly a gang movie in LA but have you guys seen "Do the Right Thing"?

Coming to America- Funniest
Do the Right Thing- Best racial movies
Harlem Nights (Best adult movie)
Menace to Society (Best Drama movie)
House Party (1 and 2 only)

"Do the Right Thing" was one of the best films ever made. I have the Criterion DVD and it's incredibly insightful. It became one of my favorite films upon first viewing, and I've loved it ever since!

You know for once, just for once, I would like to know what these folks have written:)
People post some pretty retarded and insulting stuff every now and then and are not deleted, so this stuff must really be deranged!

This movie deserves a Special Edition DVD treatment

Do The Right Thing is a masterpiece - definitely one of the best and most important and influential movies ever made. Spike Lee is smart and it shows.

Boyz n the Hood had a stereotyped story and 'moral message' but handled them well: it feels authentic and lets you draw your own conclusions without hitting you over the head with them. It's a quality movie which shows that low budget can still deliver a great movie, with a script and performances that are way better than nearly all of the Hollywood offerings around at the same time that cost x20$ more.

But South Central, unfortunately, is just a crappily-acted, stereotype-scripted pile of just about every_single_cliche that could be shoehorned in which sort of fit around false perceptions of 'LA' 'Black men' 'Black Women' 'Cops' 'Gangs' etc etc; and coming over like it was researched from newpapers by someone who'd never even heard of the place.

Add to that a constant stream of Tired-Ass Movie Tropes*, one after the other, for every single character and situation, all of which were worn-out years ago. Like 'Brave Hurt Kid' - apparently thought extinct by 1980 when it was parodied in Airplane. Like all the venegeance stuff, the evil drug-dealer stuff, the prisoners stuff, the gang of younger kids stuff...its like the entire movie has been put together by lifting bits of other movies and tv shows.

*http://tvtropes.org/ is a big list and description with examples. Recommended.

Atrocious acting: the sort that should never have gotten outside of the Shortbus High School auditorium. Examples? In prison: the scene around Jimmy with the weights, and that Quasimodo-walk 'tard-guy. There must have been so many puzzled drama-class/community group alumni watching this who knew they themselves could've done a better, proper job. No wonder so few of the actors did anything much afterwards - same goes for the director. Surprised I ain't.

A script straight out of a "Hey kids! Drugz n gunz = bad mmkay" tract comic handed out by church - but with some ClusterFux bombs added to a) pad out the scribble a bit and b) convince us these guys are so hardcore mean!

This could have - and should have- been an entertaining and thought-provoking movie which showed and examined authentic life in South Central. It doesn't take much money by movie-making standards, and as many have shown, low budget can deliver superb movies in a way big studio productions cannot. Its such a shame - the subject deserved so much better.

Was it just a hasty rip-off from the success of Boys N The Hood after all?

It was another tale about the hood. Other than that, what’s the rip off from Boyz? Boyz didn’t have a prison, drugs, or gangs, at least not named ones. It never said Dough Boy was in a gang per se.

Both movies do include a father and son though.
