Maggie Smith had the best lines!

I think Maggie Smith did an excellent job, playing the role of Mother Superior. She had some of the best lines, and her delivery was spot on! Here are three of my favorites - what are yours?

Monsignor O'Hara: You took a vow of hospitality for all in need.
Reverend Mother: I lied.

To all the nuns in full habit in a Reno casino, completely deadpan: Try to blend in.

To Delores after the first time the choir sings with her as the director: You have contaminated the entire choir!!!
and the best follow up, upon hearing someone knock at the door: (In a harsh, exasperated voice) COME IN!

Goblin Cannonball: I hit something! Yes?!? No?!?

reply

No, no, the best line is obviously "Boogie-woogie on the piano!"

Supermodels...spoiled stupid little stick figures mit poofy lips who sink only about zemselves.

reply

*Takes her first look at Delores* "That is a conspicuous woman, DESIGNED to stand out!"

And if you're like me, then you'll read this like it's part of the message too!

reply

Ha! That is a great line too!

I'm actually SO suprised that she wasn't nominated along with Whoopi for a golden globe nom, she really hit the nails on the head with all her lines and didn't fail to deliver at all! She was great!

Bishop O'Hara: You took a vow of hospitality for all in need.
Rev. Mother: I lied.

Her performance was excellent for sure! I think comedy is often overlooked and it's not easy to play funny, you know?

Shiza, that is definitely my favorite Maggie/Mother Superior line, lol.

Dame Maggie Smith is an AMAZING actress!

She's currently in a Masterpiece Classic series called Downton Abbey, where she plays a sourpuss matriarch in England, and my favorite scene so far with her is where she and the family are at supper, and they're entertaining/dealing with a nephew(?)from America who is now to become the new heir to the family estate and fortune. He happens to work, and the family doesn't because they're gentry. The soon to be ex-heir and the soon to be new heir are discussing what the new heir will do with his time, and how he'll do certain things that will be required of him. He says, "I'll take care of things on the weekend..."

Well, Maggie gets this look on her face, and pipes up, "What's a "week-end?"" and everyone just looks at her, lol.

Yeah Maggie Smith has some great lines!

One of my favorites is when the Monsignour tells an angry Maggie Smith after the music in the first show...

Monsignour: Reverend Mother, it (the music) talked to them.

Rev Mother: It did?

reply

When she's yelling at Dolores for pumping up the choir and the priest knocks on her door and she barks, "Come in!!"

reply

LOL, I love that part!!!

Goblin Cannonball: I hit something! Yes?!? No?!?

reply

"Oh, really? The last I heard your singing career was almost nonexistent, and your married lover wants you dead. God has brought you here. Take the hint."

reply

Great posts everyone.

Aside from those, my favorite has to be:
Mother Superior: "What is your name?"
Deloris: "Deloris Van Cartier"
Mother Superior: "Is that your real name?"

LMAO.

reply

Deloris: But look at me! I'm a nun! I'm a-- I'm a penguin!
Reverend Mother: As from now and until you leave you are Sister Mary Clarence.
Deloris: Mary Clarence? Like Clarence Williams III from The Mod Squad?
Reverend Mother: Mary is in deference to our Holy Mother. Clarence is in honor of Saint Clarence of Concordia. There are 3 vows every nun must accept. The vow of Poverty.
Deloris: Mmm-hmm...
Reverend Mother: The vow of Obedience...
Deloris: Mmm-hmm...
Reverend Mother: And the vow of Chastity.
Deloris: I am outta here with that.
[she starts to turn and walk away, but Reverend Mother grabs her arm and pulls her back]
Deloris: Oh,Oh, man!
