What actor would have been better?

I like Chevy Chase but I think he's pretty weak in this one. Who would have been better... or would be good now?

Bill Murray would have been nice.

Chevy Chase was just fine though.

You're all misguided. He's a crappy actor, and 'anyone' in this movie would have made it better.

He’s so bad Sam Mendez wanted to use Chase as the lead in American Beauty. But Chase retiredly declined the offer. I believe Mendez would have wanted at least part of the tone in this movie from Chase.

I can't see any one else playing the role.

Normally I'm against remakes, but this is one case where I think someone else could do much better.

I believe Chris Pratt from Guardians of the Galaxy would make a good Nick Holloway. He's about the right age (he's currently 35 and Nick was 33 in the novel IIRC). He also seems like he can give the movie the right balance of seriousness and humor. Speaking of Guardians, Bradley Cooper could be another good choice--though he's getting a bit old. Joseph-Gordon Levitt might be another option. Were I able to cast from any time period, though, I'd say a young Cary Grant would be perfect for Nick.

If they ever do a remake, though, I just hope they capture more of the fun and suspense of the novel. The book had great scenes that they didn't have in the movie. Like invisible Nick getting hunted by some kids in a park during a rainstorm or his collection of invisible objects like the gun and lighter. And his escape from the lab was more difficult and exciting, piling up invisible objects over a fence. The movie's escape scene was extremely dull by comparison. Plus, Jenkins didn't die in the novel, which I thought was a stupid adaptation decision (Why kill off such an interesting foe, especially when he could be in a sequel?).

I didn't think it was so much Chase as it was a dull script which seemed to make the actors sluggish too. I remember seeing it when it first came out and was totally unimpressed, not to mention as a comedy, it was not. Watching it now and getting the same vibe. You can only work with what you got, and they got very little to work with.
