very, very underrated

I think it is a really nice and moving picture with lots of fantastic music.
I never met a person who disliked it, and I am really disappointed about the fact that it only got 6 points from the public. I hope there are people who agree with me.

well... come to think of it...
yep i agree, it's intense, in a music induced sort of a way

I think a score of 6 suits it perfectlly. Its an ok movie that falls under to many cliches towards the end. I also found myself caring less and less for the Antonio bandera's character to the point that when he died, I didnt feel anything for him. The girl cast as Dolores was awful and that Maria girl was even worst, thank God she was only in the first few minutes of the movie. On the good side, the music was realy good as well as the preformance by Armand Assante.

I saw it for the 1st time last night, It was too short, and there should have been another minor plot line going. It seemed too unsophisticated storywise for the level of actors. It was still enjoyable and I want the soundtrack. One sidelight -- ayear or so after Tito Puente died, I was contacted by a representative of his remaining band to create ruffled Cuban style shirts. I didnt have the movie then so i got old episodes of Lucy to check out the style. The deal fell thru but it was a great brush with the famous. Any body need some shirts?

reply

Thats strange, because a friend of mine told me that someone was coming out with some type of shirt of that sort. Was it publicized?

I think that anyone who's read the book would find the rating quite accurate, perhaps generous.

This is my signature, not the last sentence of my post.

I saw the film and then read the book. In this case I preferred the visual, especially the scenes of Armand Assante playing those drums, and Antonio Banderas' sweet facial expressions.

So much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it.

All I have to say is that this movie DOES deserve a greater audience. So, yes!.... it is very underrated. It's one of those movies that you'll great appreciate and underpromoted.

reply

The movie was boring. Very unfortunate because Armand Assante is a great actor and this could have really helped his career.

thanks for ruining the ending for me.

I agree strongly that this movie deserves more than a 6 rating. It received Oscar, Golden Globe, and Grammy nominations among others. Look at other movies that have 5s or 6s. Come on. Mambo Kings is a visual and musical feast. It's a thrill to watch it. Such great actors and those cameos by music greats, etc. Great original song, incredible soundtrack, the incredible sets and costuming, the incredible performances in the club, the emotion required in the roles. Much less cliched storyline than MOST movies. A movie can't be all that a novel is, but a novel doesn't have the audio/video/acting that this movie has! Some viewers say they rated it a 6 because they were comparing it to the brilliant novel it is based on. In rating a film the fair comparison is not to the novel but to other movies in general. Other than that I think the 6 rating on imdb is mainly because there are movie viewers out there in the general public who aren't even into music, or dramas, or period dramas. Anyway, this movie blows me away. It started a whole mambo and latin music revival among the mainstream population in the 1990s like we hadn't seen in a long time, which is still continuing.

i saw this for the first time yesterday on tmc and it was great. My parents have the VHS from back in the day that it came out and i never saw it but they did have the soundtrack on cd when it came out. Also i guess the good thing that I am hispanic and have since listened to the soundtrack at different parties where mambo music is included alot and the songs were great especially 'Beautiful Maria of my Soul' (both versions) are great. I can't believe that many people out there have either not heard of the moive or saw it once and didn't like it like i have come to like it. I agree with others that it was too short and could have had more elements included. Great movie to see and has become one of my favorites.

Very rich in scenes and textures with great music

Excellent production of a special time in music history during the 1950's -- the export of Cuban music into NYC and popular American culture. Watched it last night and marveled at the lovely and vibrant music from Puente, Cruz, Pacheco and Sandoval. Strong performances by Assante and Banderas. The sequence of Assante on stage with Puente is absolutely wonderful. Unfortunately the script is not up to par with the lead acting talent nor the music, and the movie suffers for it. I think it deserves a solid "7" nonetheless, and it remains culturally relevant today.

Life is a state of mind.

Great movie which touch close to home

I watched this movie last night and half way through it I realized I'd seen it years ago, but forgot how it ended. Everyone in the cast was brilliant! The story was excellent, the direction, music all tops. I don't understand why it doesn't have a higher rating. I loved it!

reply

Love this movie! Watched it again and I still love it! The music is great and Banderas and Assante are great!
