Why didn't Martha at least *try* to speak like a female?

It was almost like Jonathan Brandis was consciously trying to deepen his voice throughout this movie, even when it made no sense like when he was disguised as Martha. The only part where he inexplicably attempted to feminize his voice was when Kimberly showed up at his house unannounced. Makes no sense!
