I know everyone will have different definition of being "cool", but here are my top three:
1. Porco rosso (Being a pig does not remotely make him less cool!)
2. Nausicaa (Look at the way she fly her glider -- way cool!)
3. Haku (It's just hard not to feel cool about someone if he can transform into a dragon!)

3, The mother wolf (Princess Mononoke:Japanese version with male voice)
All three are cool in different ways. All should be considered with the Japanese voice work, but I specifically mentioned the male voice of the Japanese actor playing the wolf mother, bacially cause she's so fricken terrifying in the Jap version in that scene on the rock where she argues with Ashitaka about the fate of San.

For me it would be:
1. Howl. My FAVOURITE Ghibli character.
2. Haku. He did so much to ensure Chihiro saved herself and her parents.
3. Totoro. He did a lot for two, sad, lonely and worried little girls.
I have to say I'm a HUGE fan of studio Ghibli and was so sad when they said they'd no longer be making movies. The only two films I haven't loved and don't rewatch are Pom Poko and My Neighbours the Yamadas. I don't know why, just neither film appealed. But all the others....sheer BRILLIANCE. My ultimate dream is to own the entire collection, minus my two unliked ones, on dvd.
