Complete Rubbish.......

Im an Irishman and have never liked this movie. Its completely inaccurate in nearly everyway possible and an insult to my countrymen. It also has to be igmitted that the Irish accent is the most inacurately portrayed of all accents. Tip; stop hiring Americans to play Irish people! Another incredibly annoying fact is that the British are always trying to claim our films and actors as theirs! Richard Harris was Irish, Liam Neeson is Irish, Pierce Brosnan is Irish, Gabriel Byrne is Irish etc. Ive even heard a British journalist refer to Colin Farrell as British, that was such a dumb remark it was hard to be insulted by it. If you want to see some good Irish movies made by Irish people check out the following:

Jesus people, IT IS A MOVIE!!!!! If you want reality (or close to it) watch documentaries. The constant harping about reality it utterly ridiculous. Moreover, when I am asked by a foreigner where I am from I say the United States. Even after that they sometimes say "oh, an American" even though technically speaking "America" takes up a lot of countries in North and South America. Only after the ask for more detail do I give my state of origin. BTW, are you affronted when foreigners portray US nationals in our movies? Happens all of the time. Mostly with the Canadians but a lot of times with Euro's too. I don't lose sleep over it for one minute but neither do I run around with thin skin looking for something to be offended about. Stop whining for goodness sakes, makes you sound like babies.

You my friend are whinning about whiners. which makes you no better than them.

great movie, decent accents, but who cares! is just a movie.

I found that Far And Away was a decent movie, not a great one but not as bad as others may have found it. It is hard sometimes to watch a movie and not let poor accents get in the way of enjoying it, but I don't think that should be a reflection on where the actors are from but rather how good an actor they are and how well they can get into their characters. For example you mentioned a couple movies above that had Daniel Day-Lewis in them, and I find that he is an exceptional actor. But the whole thing about it being an Irish movie made with Irish actors seems silly to concentrate on because even though Daniel Day-Lewis became an Irish citizen and has partial Irish ancestry, wasn't he born in England, grew up there and learned his trade there, as well as doing numerous roles based on American characters. Seems to me that a great actor learns many things and many life lessons from a number of places and people and that is what makes them great, not necessarily the county they are from. For the record I think he could learn and do about any character or accent he wanted too, Irish or otherwise.

My 2 cents - about what it's worth :-)

I'm american and I liked this film! heh

To call this film complete rubbish is complete rubbish.
I'm Irish, but fortunately I haven't got a chip on my shoulder the size of the Brooklin Bridge, like the original poster.

This film is a rip-roaring adventure, in the style of The Quiet Man, among others, and is meant to be taken as such.

It's not for the po-faced, and certainly not the po-faced Irishmen who want everything to be as downbeat and dispairing as Limerick on a wet Sunday.

So take this film for what it is, a damn good yarn.

Far And Away - "What a corker you are"

PS A special note to all Americans:
Not all us Irish are as dour and po-faced as some of the posters here would have you believe!

lol all kidding aside, good movie, fun for what it is,not a huge fan of Cruise but could have been worse. oh by the way since it apparently matters, I'm an American.

Floridian transplanted from North Carolina of scottish/italian/hungarian/jack Russel decent...feel free to discuss that and add any further anti American bigotry trolling at your leisure..I'll be happy to make the small minded and ignorant make themselves that much more apparent.

ps notice that on this movie site discussion on FAR AND AWAY I actually DISCUSSED the film.

PPS in a tourist town like orlando I have met some mighty fine irish folk. welcome to share a pint with me anytime. (I'm not irish but i DO live in a pub) (hic)

I am eastern Irish stephen. Whats your point?

I'm of Irish descent and I liked the movie for the reason that I could very well imagine my great grandfather doing much the same things as Joseph. He did, really. He and a brother left Ireland for the US, he made his way across the country with a cattle company prior to homesteading in Nebraska. Once the homestead contract was finished and he owned the land, he sold it and bought another piece of groud a few miles away - a farm that remained in the family until 1972 when my family sold it, my grandpa retired and we moved into town. I grew up in a small town about 10 miles from the original homestead.

Sorry for the woolgathering - I know that the Irish may not have liked it due to the bad accents and portrayal of the Irish people of the time, but I like the movie because of how my great grandfather did similar things in order to carve out a new life, thousands of miles from where he was born.

You've got to admit. Tom and Nicole are the biggest strength of this movie
Without them, this movie wouldn't make it this far.

I love this movie but I see your point. I'm not Irish but Swedish but I know how it feels to see your country and language being completely killed in American movies. It's not just that they get the language completely wrong but in Hollywood movies Swedes are often portrayed as stupid as well. I think almost every country in the world can relate to this more or less. American movies tend to have little respect for the other countries they portray. Of course there's errors, of course there might be hard to find a actor of the right nationality sometimes. Still I feel like too often they don't even try to get things right.
