Was the real IRA that evil?

This movie is anti-IRA, and it sure makes they look like blood-thirsty killers, Fergus excepted. Anyone have any first-hand info?

Play the game existence 'til the end...of the beginning...

The IRA was evil.
The Ulster Unionists were evil.

I swear the IRA would kill 1000 Catholics just so 1 Protestant can die and I think the Ulster Unionists would kill 1000 Protestants just to murder 1 Catholic.

The whole thing was a horrible mess with plenty of evil to go around.

They didn't appear bloodthirsty to me at all in this film. The only person they were eager to kill was the judge. They didn't particularly act as though they wanted to kill the Whitaker character. Fergus may have been the most sympathetic, but none of them (the blond, to a lesser extent) seemed very cruel to me. They were quite reasonable for a rebel group.

worthless scum all of them.

The IRA were terrorists. Terrorists are evil.

This is not to say that the English had any business occupying Northern Ireland.

there's your paradox right there

How do you get an occupying force out if not by guerilla tactics which will be labeled as "terrorism" by anyone not sympathetic to your cause .

just ask Hamas

for the most part they were probably people who believed that what they were doing was a necessary evil. but would they kill hostages if their demands weren't met? yes. would they assassinate people? yes. so yes, they did evil. but whether the people were/are evil is a much more difficult question

It all depends on your point of view. Were the American colonists blood-thirsty killers in the 1700's? I bet you could find not a few Brits who would say yes. There are similarities.

American Colonists were actually British.

Well, sure, just as most IRA members are actually British subjects. I wouldn't want to simplify things too much, but both the colonists and the IRA wanted (and still want, in the case of the IRA) out from underneath the British thumb.
