You must be a real *beep* to post something as stupid as that.

Okay, everyone, seriously. I know it's difficult for you all to read, and foreign movies are difficult for you, because they have subtitles and nothing blows up. I advise you either to take a community college course for illiterates, or don't bother watching movies that aren't in English. Secondly, it's called netiquette. All caps are not acceptable, nor are commas apostrophes. FInally, if you want to watch movies with lots of sexy ladies, go rent something with them. There are special stores for that. Perhaps rent something made by MTV. I'd like to close by saying the EUGH is not a word. Grow up.

User-8257: Are you complely retarded ? I´m icelandic Engilsh movies are foreign to me!! you azzhole..........Italian may also be foreign to me! but that does not change the fact that this movie was horrible...If anyone doesn´t think so..don´t comment!!!

reply

subtlety is just wasted on some people.

I bet you put your foot in your mouth on almost every social occasion.
Get some education retard and then comment on this. this isn t a zombie movie!!

you need to go back to school my friend?!?!??!

reply

Oh please, you don´t need an education to tell that this movie is retarded and seriously sucks...

This film should be watched by people with the sophistication, patience and intelligence to appreciate independant film-making. Comments like "omg" and "sucked" do you no favours.

Not enough car chases and pretty women for you?

"This film should be watched by people with the sophistication, patience and intelligence to appreciate independant film-making."

I admire you, this must be one of the most pretentious comments I've ever seen on the internet.

I agree with the OP, this film did indeed 'suck'. I am no stranger to the subtleties and nuances of independent cinema but this film did not work for me, which was a shame since I was expecting something grander. I'll go through the negative points. I should also begin by saying I had no idea it was the same director as Pan's Labyrinth until after I had seen the film.

- Amateurish acting
- Bad script
- Unconcinving dialogue and characterisation
- Untidy and clumsy scenes in places, especially the final fight scenes.
- Why were they speaking two languages? This was never explained. OK, so many the De la Guardas are Americans living in Spain but so what, unless the director was trying to make the film straddle two markets simultaneously. If so, it lent a rather large amount of disbelief to the storyline.
- No satisfactory background [for me, at least] about where the device came from or how it came to be fashioned. The alchemist line is slammed it at the beginning of the film and hardly alluded to again. It's like the director made the story backwards, knowing where to end it but no idea where to start it.

Extra point - Cover art. This may be no fault of the director but it was misrepresentative. Though this didn't make any difference to my enjoyment [or lack] of the film, I can see how it would ire some people.

The film is commendable for being a different and original take on the modern vampire film - and I like how the ending is open to interpretation - but this is all it did for me. I didn't find it particularly absorbing or entertaining. Having not really enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth either, I'll most likely be giving future films from this director a miss. I realise I am in the small minority here, but so be it. I am also convinced that this film is thinner than people like to think it is and there is a lot of eager overinterpretation.

Apologies for the long post.

reply

i think you might want to check the meaning of retarded. doesn't apply here, whether you liked the film or not is irrelevant. the word you're looking for is actually "subtle".

The original poster (user_8527) is being a troll!

Understandably the cover of this movie in no way reflects the content their in and your anger at this makes perfect sense. I am a firm believer that no matter how much one can try to clear their mind of bias’ or preconceived notions is a difficult task and when this is not done a movie and the movie watching experience is affected. So you might have been and rightfully so expecting a “vampire” movie involving some cleavage and action and absurd unrelateable characters participating in all sorts of debauchery and violence..or maybe even a little of this. But Cronos is at its core a love story, the love of a grandfather for his nearly mute granddaughter. Cronos is about the desperate nature of humanity and yes Jesus Gris could have destroyed the device much earlier but would you give up immortality so easy..?It was far from what most expect form vampire movies, but this is why Del Toro is a great visionary director and I am glad someone is bringing something new to this industry. I would appreciate a true negative view of this movie, but as yet you have only proved the quality of this movie through your seemingly uneducated hatred. Thanks

i'll be honest - i'm happy he posted this - i dont want to watch a movie about old men. to those criticizers - bypass your need to be right all the time. this movie CAN be about old men and a great movie. So tell the truth. Its about old men, I like it. Personally, I could give a rats ass about old men. I'm moving on. THANKS FOR THE POST

Aside from being understandably annoyed by the deceptive marketing of the cover art, the OP is being retarded. Cronos is a very good film, it just may not have been what they were expecting. Then again, if you fall for boxcover images in this day and age, you haven't been paying attention to films for a long time as this has become common practice by video companies and studios. Maybe try reading a short synopsis of a film's plot before seeing it next time. The director did something interesting with the often stale vampire subgenre.

Why does watching a little Toonami convince some kids that they're anime experts?

Well, I don't know if it "sucked", but it definitely wasn't good. The acting is horrible, the dialogue stupid, and the simplistic storyline drags on in a boring fashion until the unsatisfactory ending. And all of this is coming from a guy who loves slow-paced, plot-driven horror films.

And yes, the cover art conned me into watching this film as well. I was expecting something more stylish with a slant on lust or desire - you know - like the cover art so blatantly misadvertises. No big deal, because I would have liked this movie if it was any good. It's not, in my opinion.

The typical defense for a film such as this is to simply respond to critics by inaccurate psychoanalysis - i.e., "if you don't like Cronos, you must be an A.D.D.-ridden simpleton who needs jump scares every two minutes to be entertained." Sorry, that won't work against me. I've seen horror movies that were as slow as molasses in January, yet were very interesting. Cronos is just boring, in my opinion.

I haven't seen Pan's Labyrinth yet, but judging by del Toro's other horror films (e.g., The Devil's Backbone and Cronos), I've lost any and all excitement to see it. This guy has all the makings of a no-talent hack. If Pan's Labyrinth - with all of its hyped reputation - is a stinker, I may be done with this guy once and for all.

ill agree that as a straightforward film it isnt the best. average enough and the story is a little limited.

beyond that-reconstructing a genre-brilliantly done.

not only is it reconstructed but also "reborn", just like with Jesus Gris and this is shown through his character. im sure it is also no coincidence that Jesus Gris..Jesus Christ.. also rebirth, eternal life, this film can be seen to explore the "what if" idea- what if somebody other than JC had been given the oppertunity for eternal life and misused it, not for the good of others but for himself.

JGs character follows the religious path and there are many instances throughout the film with religious references, im sure it is a deep underlying theme of the film and as i have only watched it once tonight im going to have to re watch it soon.

Del Toro therefor is not useless, and as for people giving out about Hellboy? Come on, its a comic book film. And a poor comic book character at that. You cant blame the director for a terrible existing story.

Just my two cents, people around here need to grow up. Childish namecalling all over the place, if you cant participate in decent filmic conversation then dont bother posting, as its very, very annoying.

"This film should be watched by people with the sophistication, patience and intelligence to appreciate independant film-making."

Definatly, this is not your typical horror fest. There are no gory visuals or chilling screams in the background. If thats your thing watch "Hostel" or something. A film with very little plot and plenty gory detail...(dont get me wrong, i love gory films too ^-^)

Cronos though, was very introspective. Although we know all the signs, Jesus Gris had no clue what was happening to him. He was changing and had no way to control it. He starts craving blood, (the scene in the bathroom was so stylish and cool, how he is almost devolving into an animal and filling his desire for blood) and at first he thinks he can control it but in the end finds himself drawm to his grand-daughter (prompting her only line in the film). When he realises what sort of a monster he is becoming he smashes the device as that will apparantly end him too.

As has been said before it deals with the lengths you will go for immortality, Jesus Gris couldnt accepth that kind of life, so he dies.

I have to say that i have only finished watching it like a half hour ago, but i thought it was great. And as for the OP or whoever was bitching about thbe cover art...christ, how old are you to judge a movie by a picture??

reply

striding edge. It would have been nice if you put "SPOILERS WARNING" before you posted. thanks.

reply

Any person who judges the potential of a movie by the cover is not allowed to bad-mouth the movie afterwards. If you wanted to see more women, maybe you should consider waiting until you're old enough and renting a porn movie. This movie is not fantastic, but it's certainly better than 99.9% of everything that hollywood ejaculates towards the public every year. Try to watch more foreign movies and you might learn something.

great movie, you dont know sh"t

Gah, sorry Foxystoat. I just visited the forum after watching the film and was so annoyed by the OP that i had to say something.

That's okay. I'm sure you aren't the first person to do that. =)
