Brad Pitt's character returns from World War 2, having narrowly escaped death on the battlefield. Before he can even make it home from the airport, his motorcycle is hit by a passing car, killing his passenger (his mother) and nearly killing him. By a miracle of plot device, he is transported to Cool World, a world of cartoons.share
He could return to our world at any time, but he is too scared to leave a world where there is no concept of death. In Cool World, he doesn't age and nothing can hurt him, but he cannot make meaningful emotional and physical connections with characters that are literally 2 dimensional.
Over the course of the story, this character would learn to take risks again and return to Earth. But the last scene hints that he has a pen in his pocket, and may return to Cool World in a sequel.
